Officer’s Narrative:
[Please note: The following is a direct transcription from the officer’s narrative report. We do not fix any spelling or grammatical errors. Any changes made by our staff are placed inside brackets. Some errors may exist.]

On June 24, 2022, at approximately 1138 hours, I responded Code 3 (lights and sirens) to 1467 Hwy 124 in reference to a domestic dispute. The caller stated a female and male are fighting in a Hyundai Accent. The caller went on to say that the male was pulling on her and the steering wheel.

Upon my arrival at approximately 1157 hours, I meet with Deputy Lovein that was standing with [VICTIM #1]. [VICTIM #1] said as she and her son Matthew Wilson were driving south on Hwy 124 just past its intersection with Old Hog Mountain Rd., in her 2007 Hyundai Elantra bearing GA tag # [REDACTED].

She said they were coming from picking up his check from his job and she asked him a question and he began yelling, screaming, and arguing with her. She said as they were driving down the roadway he continued screaming “shut up, bit*h up!” She felt in fear as though he was going to hit her as he kept screaming and yelling in her face.

As she went to reach for her cell phone to call the police he grabbed her cell phone from her hands and then grabbed the steering wheel pulling it to the right. She said that’s when she flagged someone down for help at 1467 Hwy 124. She said as they were sitting in the car he pushed her again. She began crying and said, “I was afraid, He does this till he gets want he wants when he wants it!”

[VICTIM #1] continues to say that this is not the first time her son Matthew has placed his hands on her. She said approximately six months ago while they were at home he hit her several times and took her cell phone from her so she could not call the police.

Deputy Lovin advised the complainant [WITNESS #1] did witness the altercation between [VICTIM #1] (Driver) and Matthew (passenger).

[WITNESS #1] shared that at approximately 1134 hours she observed a vehicle moving at a slow rate of speed on Hwy 124 just past its intersection with Old Hog Mountain Rd. Then the vehicle made a sudden right turn into the parking lot. She goes on to say that a large male then puts his hands on an older woman who was in the driver’s seat.

He said he did not strike her with his fist but was rough and trying to remove her hands from the steering wheel and then trying to get her to leave the parking lot. She said that [VICTIM #1] then rolled down the window begging for me to call the police.

I spoke with Matthew and he said they were driving south on Hwy 124 just past its intersection with Old Hog Mountain Rd. He said they were coming from picking up his check from work and he got tired of his mother [VICTIM #1] asking him a lot of questions.

He went on to say that [VICTIM #1] was yelling at him to the point he got upset and grabbed her cell phone out of her hand so she could not call the police. He said he took her cell phone because he does not like police and they can handle this without the need for police.

I asked [WITNESS #1], [VICTIM #1], and Matthew if they would like to write a statement of what took place, and [WITNESS #1] and [VICTIM #1] said yes. I provided both of them with a witness statement form. Matthew said he did not wish to write a statement.

I told Matthew he was under arrest for Simple Assault FV and Hindering a person from making emergency phone calls. I asked Matthew if he had anything in his pockets that would harm me in any kind of way and he said no.

He requested that his keys, paycheck, and lighter be given to his mother. I placed Matthew in a double-locked handcuff behind his back, checking for fit. I escorted and secured him to the back of my patrol vehicle.

Deputy Lovein provided [VICTIM #1] with a family violence pamphlet and also explained the TPO process. He also provided her with a case number and explained how she can obtain this report.

I transported Matthew to the Detention Center where he was turned over to the Detention staff. I also filled out and completed a victim notification form. I checked the back of my patrol vehicle for any contraband, and nothing was found.

I have secured the following warrants on Matthew:

Simple Assault FV: Matthew Wilson did intentionally place his 72 year old mother [VICTIM #1] in reasonable apprehension of immediately receiving a violent injury when he continued yelling and screaming “shut up, bit*h up!” [VICTIM #1] felt as though Matthew was going to hit her as he kept screaming and yelling. [VICTIM #1] went to reach for her cell phone to call the police but Matthew grabbed her cell phone from her hands and then grabbed the steering wheel pulling it to the right. She began crying and said, “I was afraid, He does this till he gets want he wants when he wants it!”

Hindering a person from making emergency phone calls: Matthew Wilson did physically obstruct and prevent his mother [VICTIM #1] from making or completing a 911 telephone call when he grabbed her cell phone out of her hands so she could not call the police. He said he took her cell phone because he does not like police and they can handle this without the need for police.

All witness statements have been placed into evidence.
