On August 10th, 2022 at 12:45 A.M. I responded to 2100 Montgomery St in reference to a cutting.

On scene I made contact with the then Victim, Mr. William Bowman, who stated a black male by the name of “[VICTIM #1]” attacked him with a machete. Mr. Bowman was resting on the hood of a sedan near the entrance to the One Stop Shop located at the above address. I observed deep lacerations to the side of his right index finger and a superficial laceration to the top of his head. I also observed a broken 2×4 near his person with what appeared to be blood spatter on the end.

Mr. Bowman stated that the incident happened near Munchies BBQ near the intersection of W. 38th and Montgomery. A Crime Scene was located and established by other officers on scene. Mr. Bowman Stated that [VICTIM #1] made threats and taunted Mr. Bowman to “come down the side walk”. Mr. Bowman stated that [VICTIM #1] then “snuck up on him” and attacked him with a machete, striking him in the hand. Mr. [Bowman] then stated he picked up a scrap 2×4 to defend himself and struck [VICTIM #1] with it. At this point Mr. Williams would only state “I wasn’t about to let nobody kill me.”

Having previous knowledge of a separate incident I aired a description and a possible location of [VICTIM #1] as the suspect. I know [VICTIM #1] to reside in his vehicle on SE Barrington St near Shiv’s convenice store located at the intersection of SE Barrington and Montgomery St. Responding Officers were able to locate [VICTIM #1] at this location. Aggravated Assault Dectives and Forensics were requested to the scene and responded

Sgt. Dobson provided me with Ocularis footage from nearby Wells Park that showed Mr. Bowman walking in an aggresive manner with a 2×4 in hand towards [VICTIM #1] who was located at the intersection of W. 38th and Montgomery St. Mr. Bowman continued his aggressive advance and raised the 2×4 as if he were going to strike [VICTIM #1]. The footage shows [VICTIM #1] stopping on the side walk at a safe distance and assuming a defensive posture in a response to Mr. Bowman’s aggressive behavior.

When Mr. Bowman raised the 2×4 it appears that [VICTIM #1] produced a large bladed weapon, consistent with a machete, and struck Mr. Bowman in an attempt to defend against an imminent attack. A short fight followed the strike with [VICTIM #1] being knocked to the ground and recieving several blows from Mr. Bowman’s hands as well as the 2×4. A second black male in a white shirt appeared to be involved in the fight, but it is unclear whether he was assisting Mr. Bowman or attepmting intervene and separate the parties.

Mr. Bowman detained as a suspect while he was being treated by Chatham EMS. He was tansported to Memorial Hospital by Chatham EMS where he was treated and medically cleared by staff after recieving stiches for the lacerations to his index finger. I responded to Memorial Hospital to stand by with Mr. Bowman until he could be questioned by detectives.

Det. Abassi responded to the hospital and conducted an interview which resulted in Mr. Bowman being placed under arrest for Aggravated Assault (O.C.G.A 16-5-21). Mr. Bowman was advised that he was being placed under arrest for the charge and was transported to CCDC by Ofc. K Huenyh.
