On 05/17/2022, at approximately 1856 hrs, I was dispatched to 751 W Oglethorpe Hwy (Super Walmart) in reference to shoplifting.
On scene, I made contact with the complainant, Mr [WITNESS #1], with asset protection who advised that Ms Emelie Sanchez had attempted to steal merchandise from the store. Mr [WITNESS #1] was able to show me security camera footage of Ms Sanchez at the grocery side register scanning items. Ms Sanchez can be seen scanning some items, and just bagging others without scanning them. When Ms Sanchez tried to pay for what she scanned, she did not have enough money and another customer sent her money on cash app so that she could pay the remaining balance.
Ms Sanchez can be seen attempting to leave out of the grocery side of the store at 1843 hrs. An employee went through the receipt and advised her that she did not have all the items on the receipt, and that she would have to go back and pay for the items before leaving the store. Ms Sanchez can be seen attempting to leave the store again through the pharmacy side at 1850 hrs without paying for the items she did not scan. At that time Walmart asset protection detained Ms Sanchez.
Asset protection was able to take the receipt for the paid items and determine what items were not paid for. The total for all the items not paid for is $203.57 without taxes, and $213.57 with taxes.
I spoke with Ms Sanchez; she stated that she was going to leave the shopping cart by the entrance because she needed to go to her vehicle to get her card out of her car. Ms Sanchez stated that she had made a mistake by forgetting the diapers on the bottom of the cart.
When asked why she put items in the bags without scanning them, Ms Sanchez stated the items would not scan.
I wrote Ms Sanchez a citation for shoplifting (citation number 271900270) with the bond amount of $832.25. Officer Jessen (145 ) who was also on scene, served Ms Sanchez a criminal trespass notice.
I placed Ms Sanchez under arrest for shoplifting. Officer Jessen handcuffed Ms Sanchez, ensured the handcuffs were double-locked and checked for fit. Officer Jessen transported Ms Sanchez to LCJ without incident.
All unpaid for merchandise was returned to Walmart.
I provided Mr [WITNESS #1] with a CRN and advised him on how to obtain a copy of this report. My department issued body worn camera was active during this incident. Photographs of the receipts and the criminal trespass notice will be added to this report.
