On Thursday July 02, 2020, at approximately 1212 hrs,I, officer, Roger Malone with the Cohutta police dept while on patrol in Cohutta received a call from a Ms. [MANGER] of the Dollar General in Cohutta, GA. When I arrived on scene at the Dollar General, I spoke with Ms. [MANGER] along with Ms. [ASSISTANT MANAGER] at the Dollar General who is also the victim of this crime.
Ms. [ASSISTANT MANAGER] informed me that on the date of June 17, 2020 that another employee who worked with her at the Dollar General stole her transaction card information from a card that she had left on the desk in the manager’s office.
Ms. [ASSISTANT MANAGER] stated that the employee stole the information from her card by way of copying the card numbers down on paper and that on the evening of July 01, 2020 the information had been used on-line to order dinner at a local Sonic restaurant in Dalton, GA.
I reviewed the surveillance footage from the store camera’s and recorded the footage on my body camera as evidence. The offender who stole her card information is a Ms. Courtney Lashea Land of [300 block] Varnell Cedar St in Varnell, GA.
I was informed later in the day that Ms. Land was fired from her position at the Dollar General by loss prevention associates.
I was assisted in this investigation by Lt. Ryan Fowler of the Cohutta police dept. Lt. Fowler called Ms. Land and spoke with her over the phone and asked her if she would come in to the Cohutta police dept so that she could be interviewed.
Ms. Land stated that she did not have transportation and agreed that Lt. Fowler could pick her up at her residence. Lt. Fowler picked up Ms. Land at home and transported her back to the Cohutta police dept where she was interviewed by Lt. Fowler and myself.
Ms. Land gave a personal handwritten statement/confession of her own free will as to what happened in her account of this incident implicating herself as the offender and was taken into custody and placed under arrest for (1) count of financial transaction card fraud and (1) count of criminal receipt of goods fraudently obtained.
This confession was also captured on body camera after Ms. Land was given her miranda rights and signed a form of acknowledgement that she understood her rights. Ms. Land was transported to the Whitfield county jail by myself officer Malone without incident.
