On this date, 3/11/2022, I responded to an assault in progress call at 332 Northgate Dr., Curts. En route to the scene, dispatch informed me that the suspect had left the scene in a silver Toyota Sequoya and was traveling west on Northgate Dr. The suspect also had taken off the tag plate. I went westbound on Northgate Dr. and didn’t see the vehicle.

I then traveled eastbound on the north bypass while other units went westbound on the north bypass. Dispatch then informed me that the suspect called dispatch and told them that he was parked by Checkers, 1300 N Glenwood Ave. Other units went to the suspect’s location while I traveled to the complainant/victim. I arrived on the scene at Curts and spoke with [VICTIM #1] (complainant/victim).

[VICTIM #1] stated that he and his girlfriend ([WITNESS #1]) were eating at a table inside Curts. When Jerry Cornette (suspect), [WITNESS #2], and [WITNESS #3] entered the restaurant and were in line to order their food, [VICTIM #1] stated that he knew Jerry, but it had been a while since he had seen him. He didn’t know the other two individuals.

[VICTIM #1] stated that Jerry started to accuse him of sending texts of a lewd nature to his girlfriend ([WITNESS #3]). [VICTIM #1] said Jerry was yelling at him and called him “sc*red” and “a pu*sy”. [VICTIM #1] also said that Jerry said that he would take care of this outside. [VICTIM #1] got up, went outside, and stood by the hood of his vehicle. [WITNESS #1] stated that when she followed [VICTIM #1] outside, Jerry told her to tell [VICTIM #1] to “hit me up later.”

[VICTIM #1] stated that when he was standing by the hood of his vehicle in the parking lot, the three individuals came out into the parking lot. [VICTIM #1] stated that Jerry was still yelling at him and calling him a “pu*sy”. [VICTIM #1] said that [WITNESS #3] was trying to get Jerry to stop and said that [WITNESS #2] said he would blast him.

[VICTIM #1] went to the driver-side door of the vehicle and opened it. He was standing by the driver’s side seat with the door open. [VICTIM #1] said that he had a firearm in the center console and stated that he was afraid of being beaten up and thought about going for his firearm, but was worried about hitting someone in the background, which was the restaurant.

[VICTIM #1] stated that Jerry stepped up close to him with the driver’s side door in between them and hit him in the left eye with a closed fist (picture of [VICTIM #1]’s eye attached to the report). After getting hit, [VICTIM #1] stated that the three individuals took off in the silver Sequoya.

I went behind Checkers on Glenwood Ave. to speak with Jerry. Jerry stated that he entered Curts and saw [VICTIM #1] eating. He stated that he got mad at [VICTIM #1] because he sent lewd texts to his girlfriend. Jerry stated that he called him a “pu*sy” and “we can take this outside.” Jerry said that [VICTIM #1] and [WITNESS #1] left the restaurant and could see him standing by his vehicle.

Jerry said he was eating his food for about ten minutes when he still saw [VICTIM #1] standing by his vehicle. Jerry stated that he went outside and walked up to [VICTIM #1] and was scared that [VICTIM #1] would pull a firearm, so he stepped up close to him and hit him in the face with a closed fist.

A witness, [WITNESS #4], stated that he was inside Curts when his wife was outside in his vehicle, said that there were two guys in the parking lot about to fight. [WITNESS #4] went outside to the parking and stated that he saw Jerry hit [VICTIM #1] in the face with a closed fist.

I searched incident to arrest Jerry and did not find any weapons or contraband on his person. I transported Jerry to the WCSO. I charged Jerry with battery, disorderly conduct, and simple assault on warrantless arrest number 65479. Jerry was booked and left in the custody of the WCSO.

Nothing further to report at this time.
