BALDWIN COUNTY, Ga. – In a recent incident, a husband and wife found themselves victims of identity fraud, prompting an investigation into a financial scam. On November 13, 2023, an officer interviewed the male victim.
He said that on November 9, 2023, at approximately 11:43 AM, an unauthorized individual entered the Conyers branch of Robins Financial Credit Union and targeted their account. The suspect deposited a counterfeit check worth $9,600 into their savings account and then managed to withdraw $5,500 from the same account.
The Milledgeville couple was alerted to the suspicious activity when the bank notified them of the incident. Acting on advice from the Conyers Police Department, the husband traveled to the Milledgeville Police Department to file a comprehensive report.
During the interview with law enforcement, he provided crucial paperwork from Robins Financial, including an Illinois driver’s license number that the offender had used during the fraudulent transaction. Unfortunately, attempts to trace the identity using this information proved unsuccessful.
The Milledgeville Police Department submitted the provided documentation to the Records Department for further analysis.
The wife disclosed that the couple had recently received a notification from a company in which they had invested money, indicating a data breach. She believed this breach may have exposed their personal information, leading to the subsequent identity fraud incident.
The bank assured the victims that they would reimburse the stolen funds with the submission of an official police report. This investigation is active and ongoing.
