On September 13, 2025, at approximately 1431 hours, I was dispatched to [REDACTED BY AGENCY], Winder, GA, 30680 in reference to an Assault Report. The caller advised 911 Dispatch that a male subject had come over and attacked residents with a “stick”. Prior to law enforcement’s arrival, the suspect had left the area on foot. The caller described the suspect as “bow-legged” and wearing multiple pieces of clothing. Based on the description and the area where the incident had occurred, I had reason to believe that the culprit was Mr. Aaron McCoy. I respond Code 1 (Non-Emergency) to the scene.
Once on the scene, I made contact with [WITNESS #1] and several other individuals sifting underneath his front porch area. [WITNESS #1] advised that the group was playing a game of checkers when the suspect approached them and attacked them. He stated that the older black male swung a stick towards them. [WITNESS #1] also mentioned that the suspect had dropped a pair of glasses during the attack; however, he believed the suspect may have grabbed them. [WITNESS #1] stated that the suspect knocked over his table, which was holding the checkerboard.
I observed a table overturned with a few chairs lying awkwardly on the ground. I also observed large pieces of glass shards with a “checkerboard” print on them. [WITNESS #1] advised that the checkerboard was made of marble and shattered when the suspect knocked over the table. I took photos of the damage. [WITNESS #1] estimated that the cost of the checkerboard was approximately $300.
Next, I asked if anybody was hurt or struck by the suspect. I was informed by the occupants that at least three of the six people present during the attack were hit. I was able to identify two of the victims, [VICTIM #1] and [VICTIM #2]. [VICTIM #1] complained of left shoulder pain, and I did observe a bruise forming on his shoulder blade. [VICTIM #1] stated that my suspect was aiming for his face, but he dodged the stick, and he ultimately got hit on his shoulder. My other victim, [VICTIM #2], had a visible bruise on his right forearm that was swelling and appeared to have a small laceration upon it. Both victims declined to provide an official statement at the time of this report. However, I did take photos of their injuries. My third victim had left the scene, and I was unable to identify him. My two victims, at the scene, refused medical treatment.
After a brief canvas of the area, a Barrow County deputy located Aaron McCoy near the corner of Griffith Street and Capitol Avenue. I relocated to the area and observed that Mr. McCoy had a large-sized branch in his possession. I asked Mr. McCoy about it, and he stated that he used it as a walking stick. From my previous encounters with Mr. McCoy, I recall seeing him carrying this particular branch while walking and pushing a grocery store shopping cart. I asked Mr. McCoy if he had been over at [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and if he had gotten into an incident with residents at that location. Initially, he denied being at the residence, but then stated that he left his “glasses” over there, and he wasn’t sure if someone had picked up his glasses at [REDACTED BY AGENCY]. This statement put Mr. McCoy in the area of the crime.
Furthermore, Mr. McCoy did have a noticeable “bowing” stance while standing up, similar to someone being bowlegged. Mr. McCoy was detained in handcuffs. Mr. McCoy was cuffed with his hands behind his back, and the handcuffs were checked for proper fitment. Mr. McCoy was frisked for weapons, and I removed a pocketknife from his right pocket. I also conducted a probable cause search of Mr. McCoy’s belongings for any other “sticks” that could have been used as an assault weapon, with negative results. Mr. McCoy was placed in the backseat of my patrol vehicle #423 behind the passenger’s front seat. His belongings were secured in the rear cargo area of my patrol vehicle.
I relocated back to [REDACTED BY AGENCY] to follow up with the victims. I did not allow them to see Mr. McCoy; however, I retrieved the walking stick from my patrol vehicle and showed it to them. One of the victims, [VICTIM #2], did positively identify the walking stick as the weapon used to attack them.
I went back to my patrol vehicle and informed Mr. McCoy that he was officially under arrest, and I transported him to jail. Note: During my frisk for weapons, no other items were found on my arrestee’s person, nor was any contraband, other weapons, or means of escape discovered in his other belongings during my probable cause search.
Upon arrival at the Barrow County Detention Center, Mr. McCoy and his belongings were turned over to the staff without further incident. I informed Mr. McCoy of his pending charges. Aaron McCoy was also informed that he was barred from the residence of [REDACTED BY AGENCY]. The rear seat of my patrol vehicle was searched for contraband prior to and after transport with negative results. My Watch Guard body camera was worn and activated. The onboard mobile camera from my patrol vehicle was activated during transportation.
I procured warrants against Mr. Aaron McCoy for the following:
- Criminal Trespass # 2025-2959MW
- Disorderly Conduct # 2025-2960MW
- Simple Assault # 2025-2961MW
- Battery # 2025-2962MW
- Battery # 2025-2963MW
