Barrow County (May 21, 2022) – A call placed to 911 about a fake suicide threat at the Baymount Inn leads to arrest warrants issued for a Barrow County man on domestic violence charges.

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office issued warrants for Donny Ray Bevers, of Winder, after officers responded to check on the condition of the suspect’s ex-fiancé.

Bevers contacted the hotel clerk of the Baymount Inn, on Highway 211, and advised that a female staying at the hotel was suicidal. The clerk called 911 and requested authorities check on the welfare of the victim.

Once law enforcement arrived on scene, they located the victim who had injuries consistent to being violently attacked by another person. The victim told officers that she had being beaten, strangled and assaulted by her ex-fiancé causing bruising and swelling on her body. She stated that he had blocked the door to the room and would not allow her to leave

The victim advised that Bevers has a history of drug abuse and violence against her and has strangled her to unconsciousness in the past. The victim stated that the fight began because Bevers accused her of cheating on him.

She advised that Bevers will often call 911, when she does not answer her phone, and tell them she is suicidal.

EMS arrived and checked the victim’s injuries. She declined transport to the hospital.

Officers attempted to contact Bevers by phone and he did not answer. Based on the physical evidence, officers secured arrest warrants for Bevers for Aggravated Assault (Family Violence), False Imprisonment, Battery (Family Violence).

The victim was given a pamphlet on family violence and instructions on how to obtain a TPO.

On May 21, 2022, at approximately 0108 hours I responded “Code 1” to 2069 Highway 211 NW, Baymount Inn, in reference to a suicide threat. Dispatch advised that Braselton PD was requesting our assistance due to their units not being available. Dispatch advised that a male called the hotel clerk telling her that she needed to call 911 due to a female in room [REDACTED] being suicidal.

Upon arriving I spoke to the receptionist. She advised that a male called her and advised that a female in room [REDACTED] was suicidal. She advised that the female in room [REDACTED] was [VICTIM #1]. I responded to the room and made contact with Ms. [VICTIM #1]. She answered the door and immediately I noticed that her biceps/shoulders were covered in bruises. The bruises were small. From my experience with working assaults, I believed the bruises to be from fingers. I also noticed that her left cheek and eye appeared swollen.

I asked Ms. [VICTIM #1] what happened. She advised that on May 20, 2022, at approximately 1500 hours to 1600 hours her ex-fiancée “strangled” her in the hotel room. She showed me her neck which was red and bruised. She identified her ex-fiancée as Donny Bevers. She advised that Mr. Bevers is “very violent”. She advised the Mr. Bevers does methamphetamine and becomes violent. She advised that the argument today was because he thought she was cheating on him.

She advised during the argument that Mr. Bevers blocked the door to the hotel room and would not allow her to leave. She advised that Mr. Bevers hit her with an open hand in the face causing the bruising and swelling to her left cheek and eye. She further advised that during the argument Mr. Bevers “strangled” her from behind. She demonstrated a “rear naked choke.” This is done from behind with an arm around the neck, using the bicep and forearm to squeeze the throat and neck causing blood flow to be cut off and sometimes the airway as well..

She advised that he also strangled her with both hands, squeezing her neck and throat. She advised that Mr. Bevers stated, “You’ll pass out soon.” She advised that he has strangled her to unconsciousness before and believed he was going to do it again. I noticed that her neck had makeup on it and asked why. Ms. [VICTIM #1] advised that Mr. Bevers left around 1800 hours. She advised she had to go to work at 1900 hours and covered up the bruises to her face and neck so no one would notice.

Ms. [VICTIM #1] advised that she did hit and scratch Mr. Bevers to get away from him. Once she was able to get away, she advised that Mr. Bevers took a corkscrew opener and scratched his forearms. She advised that she told him to stop and tried to take it from him. She showed me a small puncture wound to her right palm from the corkscrew.

Ms. [VICTIM #1] also advised that Mr. Bevers took several items from her including a pink pocket knife and her debit card. She advised that she was, “at his mercy” because he had the debit card. She advised that she was able to get the items back. She advised that Mr. Bevers hid the items in the woods near the hotel and told her where to find them. I noticed small twigs stuck in her hair as she told me this.

She showed me her call log from Mr. Bevers. It appeared that he called her approximately 20 times. She advised that he calls 911 when she does not answer telling 911 that she’s suicidal. EMS Med5 arrived and checked Ms. [VICTIM #1] for injuries. She declined to go to the hospital. I noticed while talking to her that there her eyes were blood shot. This is a common occurrence when someone is strangled.

I gave Ms. [VICTIM #1] a family violence packet and explained the Peace Place and how to obtain a TPO to her. I also told her how to get a copy of this report. I also told her that I would be securing arrest warrants for Mr. Bevers and explained victim rights to her.

During my conversation with Ms. [VICTIM #1], she advised that she deserved the injuries because when Mr. Bevers hits her, she tells him “Is that all?” and “Do you feel like a man?” I assured her that she did not deserve it. Ms. [VICTIM #1] advised that she lived with Mr. Bevers from December 2021 to April 2022 and he was currently staying in the hotel with her.

I photographed her injuries. I placed them on a CD and secured them in evidence. Deputy Kinney called Mr. Bevers but he did not answer.

Based on physical evidence I will be securing the following warrants:

Aggravated Assault FV
False Imprisonment
Battery FV x2
