On January 11, 2022, at 0321 hours, I was dispatched to 955 Harrison Mill Road (Latin American Auto Salvage) in reference to a burglary in progress. Dispatch advised that two subjects were currently in the process of breaking into the business. I responded to the location “code three.”
When I arrived at the business, I began driving down a long, winding driveway that led to the back of the property where the business was located. When I got to near the end, I observed a male, later identified as [WITNESS #1], standing in the middle of the driveway. He had another male, later identified as Percy Crews, standing beside him. I observed that Percy had his hands behind his back and that his wrists were zip tied together.
I immediately took Percy from [WITNESS #1], patted him down for weapons, and instructed him to sit on the ground in front of my patrol vehicle. I then observed [WITNESS #1] and another male, identified as [WITNESS #2], walking towards me with another male, later identified as Jeremy Turner. [WITNESS #2] had ahold of Jeremy by the shoulder and had a pistol in his left hand. I immediately drew my service weapon, pointed it at [WITNESS #2] and began giving him loud verbal commands to drop the gun. After a few moments, [WITNESS #2] threw the pistol on the ground. I held all three of them at gun point until other units arrived on scene to assist.
Once other units arrived on scene, all three were secured into handcuffs and patted down for weapons. I then spoke with Jeremy and asked him why they were at the location. He explained to me that him and Percy had seen the business on a map and decided that they wanted to just go out and look around since Percy likes the outdoors. Jeremy told me that [WITNESS #2] had beat him with a machete and shot at him multiple times. Then tried to secure his hands with zip ties. Jeremy stated that when he heard my sirens, he attempted to run away from [WITNESS #2], but he caught him and brought him up to me.
I spoke with Percy, and he told me that him and Jeremy had come to the location and just were wanting to hang out and look around. [WITNESS #3], who is [WITNESS #2]’s wife, arrived on scene and was able to translate for [WITNESS #2] and [WITNESS #1]. [WITNESS #2] stated that [WITNESS #1] and he arrived at the business to head into work around 0300 hours. When they arrived, the seen Percy and Jeremy taking tires out of the storage shed and stacking them up in stacks. They approached them and tried to confront them. [WITNESS #2] went on to say that both Percy and Jeremy attempted to run away from them. [WITNESS #2] stated he pulled his pistol out and shot up into the air one time in attempts to stop them from running. He stated that they used a small piece of wood to hit Jeremy on the back of his legs to get him to stop running. They then placed Percy and Jeremy into zip ties to wait for our arrival. [WITNESS #2] stated that Jeremy told him that a tire shop in Winder was paying him to steal the tires and bring them to them. He went on to say that they were telling him the exact sizes to take. [WITNESS #3] escorted Sgt. Bradley and I to the area in the storage shed where the tires were originally stacked.
There was a large section of tires that were missing out of a row. There was pollen and dirt all over the tires that were in the shed. I also observed footprints in the mud in front of the shed. There were 58 tires stacked up into stacks of 5 in the driveway of the business. The tires that were stacked up were covered in the same pollen and dirt as the ones in the shed. The tires would have had to have been placed there within the last 24 hours since it rained and would have washed the pollen and dirt off the tires. [WITNESS #3] explained that in the past few months, they have had more than 900 tires stolen from the location. [WITNESS #3] stated that she was willing to prosecute in the thefts. [WITNESS #3] valued the price of the tires at $20 each. Deputy Wright located Jeremy’s vehicle parked in a field beside the business. The Ford expedition had the seat laid down in the back. There was a blue tarp laid flat in the back that had black tire residue, pollen, and dirt on it. On January 3, 2022, Barrow County Deputies responded to an address beside the business in which Jeremy’s vehicle was located stuck in mud out in a field. Deputies were unable to make contact with him on that day.
Percy and Jeremy were placed under arrest and secured in the rear seat of Deputy Powell’s patrol car. They were both read their Miranda rights and they agreed to speak with us. They both denied being on the property to steal the tires. Deputy Powell transported Percy and Jeremy to the Barrow County Detention Center.
Jeremy’s vehicle was turned over to his mother, [REDACTED]. Both Percy and Jeremy’s cellphones were placed into evidence at the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office.
[WITNESS #3] was given a contact card with the case number on it. It was explained to her how she could obtain a copy of the report.
[NARRATIVE #2]
On January 11th, 2022, at approximately 0323 I was dispatched to 955 Harrison Mill Road for a Burglary in progress. I responded code 3.
I arrived at approximately 0328 hours to Deputy Kinney with two males at gunpoint and 2 males detained. I detained [WITNESS #1], I handcuffed him behind the back checked for proper fit and double-locked them. Once everything was sorted out I un-detained [WITNESS #1].
I placed a handcuffed Jeremy Turner and a Handcuffed Percey Crews in the backseat of my patrol car to escort them to the Barrow County Detention Center.
I arrived at the Detention Center and turned Jeremy and Percey over to detention staff for processing. Deputy Kinney called and advised me to seize their phones for evidence and leave them with a property receipt. I collected their phones and turned them over to the Barrow County Evidence locker for processing.
