On Sunday, January 18, 2026, I, Deputy Kile, observed a red Chevrolet Camaro bearing Georgia Tag # [REDACTED], traveling southbound on Pio Nono Avenue while I was operating a marked patrol vehicle northbound on Pio Nono Avenue. The vehicle appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed and was weaving within its lane.

I activated my department-issued Decatur G3 radar, which displayed an initial speed of 87 mph, followed by a reduction to 64 mph, at which time I locked the speed. The posted speed limit in the area is 45 mph.

I turned my patrol vehicle around and maneuvered behind the Camaro near Beech Avenue, activating my emergency blue lights and siren in an attempt to initiate a traffic stop. The Camaro failed to yield and instead accelerated. I immediately notified dispatch that I was in pursuit and provided my direction of travel.

The Camaro continued southbound on Pio Nono Avenue, reaching speeds in excess of 110 mph. The vehicle failed to stop for a steady red traffic signal at Eisenhower Drive and continued southbound. Upon reaching Spencer Circle, the Camaro attempted to make a right turn, struck and ran through a stop sign and street sign at the intersection of Pio Nono Avenue and Spencer Circle, and then collided with vent pipes for the underground fuel tanks at the Chevron gas station located at that intersection, causing significant front-end damage to the vehicle. (Refer to Accident Report # 2026-5362)

Despite the collision, the Camaro continued through the gas station parking lot before coming to rest on the north side of the lot. The driver, later identified as Akanni Burton, exited the vehicle and fled on foot, running up Spencer Circle and then turning right onto Rice Mill Road. Burton ran through the front yard at [3700 BLOCK] Rice Mill Road.

At that time, I parked my patrol vehicle in front of the residence, exited, and pursued Burton on foot. Burton jumped a fence and continued fleeing toward the rear of another property. I deployed my department-issued Taser, successfully striking Burton and preventing him from climbing another fence he was attempting to scale. Burton was then taken into custody without further incident. 10 Taser Cartridges were deployed and nine were recovered. Only two of the nine made a connection due to Burton’s baggy clothing. Taser Cartridges recovered Serial Numbers are:

T2506DA9A, T2506DA94, T2506DA9P, T2506DA99, T2506DA9H, T2506DAAC, T2506DAA7, T2506DA92,T2506DAA6, T2506DA8N (Turned into Crime Lab for Evidence)

While detaining Burton, I detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his breath and person. I also observed Burton’s eyes to be bloodshot and watery, and his speech was slurred. Burton was evaluated and medically cleared on scene by Navicent Atrium EMS.

After being placed in the rear seat of my patrol vehicle, Burton stated multiple times that he was “very intoxicated.” I then read Burton the Georgia Implied Consent Notice and requested that he submit to a state-administered blood test. Burton refused to submit to the requested test.

Mr. Burton is charged with the following:
Felony – Fleeing and Attempting to Elude
Obstruction of a Law Enforcement Officer
DUI – Refusal
Reckless Driving
Speeding 110/ 45 mph
Hit and Run – Leaving the scene of an accident
Failure to Obey Traffic Control Device
