Warning: The following story contains information regarding alleged sexual violence against children.
BIBB COUNTY, Ga. – Authorities arrested a 40-year-old high school band director and charged him with misdemeanor sexual battery for multiple incidents involving a former student. Joseph Patrick Martin, former band director at Westside High School, has been accused of inappropriately touching a teenage boy who considered him a “father figure” in “private areas” numerous times.
The victim told police he was afraid of what Martin would do if he refused his requests or reported what occurred. He described the band teacher as his mentor and “one of the only father figures he had in his life.”
He explained that Martin had invited him to spend the night at his residence on several occasions, and an incident in May 2024 caused him to report it to his mother. He told her Martin instructed him to remove his clothes and sit on the couch; he hesitated but complied.
He told Martin he wanted to put his clothing back on, but Martin told him to wait “just a few more minutes.” When the victim informed his mother, she called and confronted Martin, who admitted to the allegations and became apologetic.
Investigators traveled to Martin’s home and inquired about the incidents. Martin replied, “I do not wish to say,” and stated that he wanted an attorney.
A Bibb County School District spokesperson said the board was informed of the accusations on June 1 and placed him on administrative leave. Records revealed that his final day of employment at the school was June 11.
This case is currently pending in court.
