On 03/22/26 at 0826 hrs, I, Sgt. George Witherspoon spoke with [VICTIM #1] [REDACTED BY AGENCY], who stated that a male known to him only by the nickname “Jersey” assaulted him at or near [1200 BLOCK] Telfair St.
[VICTIM #1] stated that earlier in the day, both he and Jersey had been at a church for Sunday breakfast. During that visit, Jersey allegedly attempted to take a bag containing [VICTIM #1]’s belongings, but was stopped by the church’s program director. [VICTIM #1] stated that Jersey appeared upset and angry over that incident. [VICTIM #1] advised that later, upon seeing him at [1200 BLOCK] Telfair St., Jersey approached him armed with an ink pen and a piece of metal that had been fashioned or used like a jailhouse-style shank, and attempted to stab him.
Witness [WITNESS #1] [REDACTED BY AGENCY] stated he was familiar with both parties and attempted to intervene, pleading with Jersey to stop and warning him that he would end up in jail. Instead, Jersey pleaded with [WITNESS #1] to let him “kill him,” referring to [VICTIM #1]. According to [VICTIM #1], [WITNESS #1]’s intervention only briefly deterred Jersey.
[VICTIM #1] stated that Jersey then chased him toward the rear of the location, where Jersey picked up a wooden 2×4 and continued the assaultive behavior, striking [VICTIM #1] at least once on his left side. [VICTIM #1] stated that he and Jersey then began to tussle and fell to the ground. [WITNESS #1] advised that he intervened again and assisted in wrestling the board away from Jersey, which ultimately stopped the attack. However, [VICTIM #1] had already sustained visible cuts and scratches to his forehead and face near his nose. [VICTIM #1] also complained of pain in his left side, where he was struck with the board. [WITNESS #1] stated that the injury to [VICTIM #1]’s forehead was likely caused by Jersey swinging the piece of metal wire during the struggle on the ground.
Both [WITNESS #1] and [VICTIM #1] say that if not for [WITNESS #1]’s intervention, they believed Jersey intended to seriously injure or kill [VICTIM #1]. They described Jersey as being a black male wearing a blue suit, black jeans, and a brown-and-black hat at the time of the incident.
[VICTIM #1] was checked at the scene by EMS before being transported to Atrium Health for further care.
