On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at or about 0821 hours I, Lieutenant Coleman Lewis, was driving down Riverside Dr and as I approached 778 Riverside Dr, just past New St, I observed a black male grab the hair of a black female and begin to pull her around by the hair. I turned on my blue lights as I was in an unmarked vehicle. I separated the two and detained the male, identified as Vernon Coleman, with handcuffs behind his back. Coleman stated that the female had his wallet and his money. The female identified as [VICTIM #1] stated that she did not have anything of Coleman’s.
I did check [VICTIM #1]’ pockets and did not find anything belonging to Coleman. I then called for a female Deputy to do a more through pat down. Sgt. A. Endsley responded. I alerted dispatch to the fact that I was out with a fight and had not turned on my portable radio at the time. Since I was not responding to dispatch, this prompted other units to respond. Sgt. J. Litton and Cpl. S. Saidi also arrived on scene.
Once the scene was more secure, I spoke to [VICTIM #1] who stated that she had stayed in the room with Coleman at the Macon Inn last night. She stated that she woke up this morning and went to walk to the store to buy a Black and Mild cigar, but Coleman followed her accusing her of taking his wallet and money. She stated that Coleman had taken her bag near the intersection of Spring St and Riverside and tossed everything out of it. [VICTIM #1] stated that she walked away and left the bag. Coleman followed her and that was when I saw him grab her by the hair.
Coleman stated that [VICTIM #1] had his wallet and that he paid for the room. When I told him that him paying for the room had nothing to do with this incident he repeated over and over that [VICTIM #1] had his wallet and his money.
[VICTIM #1] bag was recovered at the Riverside and Spring St intersection. There was no wallet or money located in the bag. After pat downs by two deputies, both Sgt. Endsley and I, it was determined that [VICTIM #1] was not in possession of the wallet as described by Coleman. I asked [VICTIM #1] if she wanted to press charges and she stated that she did.
Vernon Coleman was charged with simple battery and disorderly conduct. He was transported to the Bibb County LEC by Cpl. Saidi without incident.
