On April 28, 2026, at approximately 2354 hours, I was dispatched in reference to a reckless driver traveling westbound on Highway 520 near mile marker 26. I observed a vehicle matching the provided description on Highway 520 near Pembers Road. While following the vehicle, I observed it cross the fog line and travel onto the shoulder approximately five times. I initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Highway 520 and Satilla Avenue. Prior to coming to a complete stop, the vehicle drove onto a curb.
I made contact with the driver, identified as Alejandro Rodriguez. Upon approach, I observed four empty Modelo alcoholic beverage containers on the passenger side floorboard and a bottle cap on Mr. Rodriguez’s leg. I explained the reason for the stop and detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath. I requested Mr. Rodriguez driver’s license, he provided a Mexican passport and stated he did not possess a valid driver’s license.
I asked Mr. Rodriguez to exit the vehicle and walk to the front of my patrol unit. While doing so, he appeared unsteady on his feet and was staggering. For safety reasons, I instructed him to sit on the tailgate of the vehicle. While I was attempting to verify Mr. Rodriguez information through dispatch, Officer Sturgill (#610) of the Nahunta Police Department remained with him. During this time, Mr. Rodriguez admitted to Officer Sturgill that he had been consuming alcoholic beverages. Sergeant Lee administered a portable breath test, which yielded a result of 0.181.
Based on my observations and the test results, Mr. Rodriguez was placed under arrest. Mr. Rodriguez was read implied consent and consented to a blood draw. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed an additional 16 open containers located on the rear floorboard. I requested EMS via dispatch to meet at the Brantley County Jail to conduct the blood draw. Mr. Rodriguez was transported to the Brantley County Jail, where EMS obtained a blood sample. He was then turned over to jail staff without further incident.
