On January 30, 2026, I, Deputy Herman Benefield, was dispatched to [100 BLOCK] Plantation Avenue in reference to a hit-and-run accident.
Upon arrival, I made contact with [VICTIM #1]. [VICTIM #1] stated that she returned home around 1200 hours from therapy and was informed by another individual at the residence that her cousin, Dexter Crowder, had backed into her vehicle and left the scene. [VICTIM #1] advised that she contacted Dexter and questioned him about the incident. Dexter admitted that he struck her vehicle and stated that he was scared and did not want to tell her. [VICTIM #1] further advised that Dexter drives a white Chevrolet Tahoe with black wheels.
Using online resources, I was able to locate Dexter’s vehicle and issued a BOLO to the Carrollton Police Department. Utilizing Flock camera data, I observed that earlier on January 30, 2026, the vehicle showed no rear damage. Later that same day, after the reported incident, the vehicle displayed damage consistent with backing into another vehicle on the right rear bumper.
While on scene, [VICTIM #1] contacted Dexter and advised him to return to the residence. A short time later, Dexter arrived driving at a high rate of speed through the neighborhood before slowing and pulling into the driveway. I made contact with Dexter and had him exit the vehicle. Dexter apologized and stated again that he was scared and did not want to inform [VICTIM #1] that he had struck her vehicle.
Dexter was placed under arrest. During a search incident to arrest, I located a clear plastic bag containing multiple pieces of crack cocaine along with U.S. currency in small denominations in Dexter’s right pocket. Based on my training, knowledge, and experience, and due to the amount of U.S. currency found in conjunction with the crack cocaine, the quantity was more than a user amount.
Dexter was placed in the rear of my patrol unit and transported to the Carroll County Jail, where he was released to jail staff to be booked on the following charges: Possession of Crack Cocaine with Intent, Hit and Run, and No Insurance.
Both vehicles were left on scene at [100 BLOCK] Plantation Avenue. All evidence was transported to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and placed into an evidence locker.
