On 10/19/2025, I was assigned to the SWAT team, working a downtown visibility detail due to violent incidents that had been occurring in the city market and Ellis square area. I wore my SWAT issued gear and equipment.
At around 0100 hours, I heard a call over the radio of an ongoing fight at Barrel House (125 W Congress St). As soon as I arrived on scene, there were multiple officers but no activities indicative of a fight inside or around the bar. While standing adjacent to the bar, I observed a white male who appeared to be arguing with the bar’s security team. He was escorted out and walked to his friend, who I later identified as Carson Mead.
While both subjects were standing behind me, I heard them scream towards the security. Due to the loud crowd and music, I could not discern their exact words, but with their tone and hand gestures, it appeared they were taunting for a fight. I also observed one of the security personnel scream in the same manner back at them while standing by the bar’s entrance. I immediately turned around and told Carson and his friend to leave the area. Both subjects attempted to pass me and walk towards the bar while yelling and pointing at the security personnel.
I physically blocked them with my hands and started moving them backwards. They were still yelling and throwing hand gestures towards the security personnel. Carson was flipping off the security and attempting to walk towards them.
While moving them backwards, Carson slapped my hand off his chest and attempted to stand his ground by refusing to move. I immediately struck him twice with an open palm slap to his face while pushing him backwards. With the strikes being effective, I pushed Carson to Sorry Charlie’s wall where multiple police officers subdued him and placed him into handcuffs. He was then put inside a marked unit where he was transported to hospital then to CCDC.
I informed my supervisor of the use of force.
Since I had my BWC on sleep mode, it did not get the beginning of the incident. However, Barrel House’s manager, [REDACTED], uploaded the video footage of the incident into evidence.com.
Carson was arrested for disorderly conduct. His other friend was not detained.
