On 12/14/25, at about 1302 Hours, I responded to Waverley Station Apartments unit [REDACTED] at [2100 BLOCK] Benton Blvd. for an Aggravated Assault Strangulation (DVA) call.
Information given via Dispatch was that the caller, later identified as [VICTIM #1], had been “Choked” to the point where she almost passed out and the male, later identified as Charles Butler, was not letting her out of the house with her kids.
Upon arrival I spoke to [VICTIM #1] who advised Butler had left after the altercation in a gray Dodge Durango wearing a white shirt and flag print shorts. [VICTIM #1] advised she and Butler are not married but have two children together and they live together as a matter of convenience.
[VICTIM #1] advised she and Butler were having an argument over the relationship and Butler was yelling at her in front of their children, later identified as [JUVENILE #1] and [JUVENILE #2]. [VICTIM #1] advised she told Butler she just wanted to pack their things and leave and went into the room to start packing. [VICTIM #1] advised while in the back bedroom, Butler started to take a shower and according to [VICTIM #1], said something smart that caused her to chuckle a little. [VICTIM #1] advised Butler “Jumped out of the shower” and slammed the bedroom door closed.
[VICTIM #1] advised that she was bent over grabbing some clothes when Butler pushed onto the bed, then came from behind her and put her in a headlock, causing her to start blacking out. [VICTIM #1] advised she was able to “Wiggle” her way out of the hold before passing out and pushed Butler off of her.
[VICTIM #1] advised she then got her phone and stepped outside to call the Police with Butler following after her. While on the phone with Dispatch, [VICTIM #1] advised Butler tried to grab her phone from her. [VICTIM #1] showed me video of what appears to be Butler reaching out towards where she was standing and I heard [VICTIM #1] yell “Stop grabbing my phone!”
[VICTIM #1] was out of frame during that incident so, it was audio only.
[VICTIM #1] advised Butler then went in the apartment and started grabbing her clothes and brought them outside. Butler then brought them back when he heard [VICTIM #1] calling Dispatch and telling them he was taking her clothes out of the apartment. [VICTIM #1] advised Butler left after bringing her clothes back into the apartment.
[VICTIM #1] was able to show the last video recordings from her cameras from before Butler took them down. The video does show Butler grabbing the cameras from their mounts and discarding them. The doorbell camera was found near the back porch and the interior camera has not been located.
I did observe some small discolored marks on [VICTIM #1]’s neck from where Butler had her in a headlock. [VICTIM #1] advised she was a little horse when she spoke and had been coughing after the incident.
I then went and spoke to the neighbors in apartment #[REDACTED] if their camera (mounted on the door) captured any video of the incident. The neighbor, later identified as [REDACTED], reviewed the camera footage and does have video and audio of [VICTIM #1] and Butler as they came in and out of the apartment.
The On-Duty Supervisor and Family Violence Detectives were notified of the incident. Detectives arrived on scene and once on scene the investigation was turned over to them.
A CRN was issued for this incident and video from my Body Worn Camera was saved.
Butler was later found to still be on property and spoke to Detectives. Butler was then placed in custody, searched incident to arrest (no contraband found) and placed in the rear seat of my fully marked Police vehicle. Once all paperwork was complete, Butler was transported to the Chatham County Detention Center without further incident.
