On October 15, 2025, at approximately 1523 hours, I responded to [20 BLOCK] Catherine Circle in reference to a report from a mother stating that her daughter had been physically assaulted (“jumped”) by another juvenile and the juvenile’s mother.
Upon arrival, I made contact with the victim, identified as [VICTIM #1]. [VICTIM #1] stated that earlier in the day, a student at her school (Jenkins High School), identified as [REDACTED BY AGENCY] was involved in a physical altercation with another student inside a classroom. She advised that she was not involved in that incident, which she described as a one-on-one fight.
[VICTIM #1] provided a video of the school fight, which corroborated her account showing only two younger males fighting in a classroom, with no other individuals involved.
[VICTIM #1] stated that after school, she boarded the bus to go home. While en route, she observed a red Ford vehicle following the bus. Upon arriving at her designated stop, she exited the bus and noticed that the red Ford remained behind it.
At that point, [VICTIM #1] observed [REDACTED BY AGENCY] exit the vehicle while his mother, later identified as Detra McCoy, remained inside recording the encounter. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] allegedly confronted [VICTIM #1] about the earlier fight, apparently under the mistaken belief that she had been involved.
According to [VICTIM #1], the situation escalated when [REDACTED BY AGENCY] struck her in the face. She stated that both [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and Detra then physically assaulted her. She further reported that during the assault, Detra pulled her hair, restrained her, and instructed [REDACTED BY AGENCY] to continue hitting her. Following the altercation, both individuals returned to the red Ford and left the area.
[VICTIM #1] sustained multiple visible injuries, including bruising to the face and scratch marks on both sides of her face and neck. These injuries were photographed and uploaded to evidence.com.
After obtaining her statement, I requested the assistance of a Board of Education (BOE) officer to gather further information on [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and Detra. The BOE officer was able to confirm Detra McCoy’s identity and provided the address of the involved parties: [10 BLOCK] E Fairmont Avenue.
Before departing the scene, I provided a case report form to [VICTIM #1]’s mother, [REDACTED], and informed her that the incident would be officially documented.
Follow-Up Investigation:
Officers and I proceeded to [10 BLOCK] E Fairmont Avenue to make contact with Detra McCoy and [REDACTED BY AGENCY]. Upon knocking, Detra answered the door and permitted officers to enter the residence. When questioned about the day’s events, Detra initially stated that her son had been involved in a school fight and that she had picked him up afterward in her red Ford, then brought him home. She denied any knowledge of a post-school altercation and denied involvement in any incident at the bus stoр.
While speaking with Detra, [REDACTED BY AGENCY] emerged from a back room. Both he and Detra were detained and placed in separate marked patrol vehicles.
I advised Detra that, due to her being detained, I was required to read her Miranda Rights, which I did. Detra acknowledged her rights and agreed to speak with me without legal counsel present.
Detra then stated that she had picked up [REDACTED BY AGENCY] from school and had been running errands while waiting for her other son to be released from school. She claimed that she and [REDACTED BY AGENCY] were at the bus stop because both he and [VICTIM #1] share the same stop. According to her account, [REDACTED BY AGENCY] exited the vehicle to speak with [VICTIM #1], whom he believed would support him regarding the earlier school fight.
Detra admitted that during their interaction, [REDACTED BY AGENCY] struck [VICTIM #1] in the face. She also admitted to recording the incident on her phone but claimed she did not know why she did so. She further stated that she eventually attempted to break up the fight by physically intervening, grabbing both parties by their shirts. After separating the two, she left the scene with her son.
I then attempted to interview [REDACTED BY AGENCY] regarding the incident, but he declined to make a statement.
Arrests and Charges:
Based on the statements obtained, physical evidence, and Detra McCoy’s own admissions, the following enforcement actions were taken:
Detra McCoy was arrested and charged with:
Simple Battery
Cruelty to Children 1st Degree
Detra was transported to the Chatham County Detention Center by another officer and booked without incident.
[REDACTED BY AGENCY] was charged with:
Battery
Following consultation with the Regional Youth Detention Center (RYDC), [REDACTED BY AGENCY] was released on scene into the custody of his 18-year-old sister, [REDACTED]. A Juvenile Complaint Form was completed, and [REDACTED BY AGENCY] was informed that RYDC would be following up with him regarding the charge.
Evidence Collected:
Video of the classroom fight (provided by [VICTIM #1])
Video of the physical altercation at the bus stop (provided by [VICTIM #1])
Photographs of [VICTIM #1]’s injuries
(All materials were uploaded to evidence.com.)
This concludes my involvement in this incident.
