On August 2, 2026, at approximately 0511 hours, I was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident at Main Street and Bourne Avenue. Upon my arrival, Chatham County Police officers were already on scene and advised that the crash had occurred within Garden City Police Department’s jurisdiction.
As I approached the scene, I observed a female sitting on the guardrail. I was advised that she was the registered owner’s mother. She stated the involved vehicle belonged to her daughter and that her daughter had called her, asking her to respond to the scene to retrieve her cell phone and purse from the vehicle. I asked where her daughter was currently located, and she stated she was at a friend’s house but did not know the friend’s name or location. I asked her how her daughter had contacted her, and she stated the call was made from a friend’s phone.
Chatham County Police advised there was a witness who observed the crash occur. The witness stated he notified Georgia Ports Police of the accident, and when he returned to the scene, the driver, a white female, had already left.
I asked the mother if she knew whether her daughter had gone home. She stated she was unsure. The mother had a set of keys to the Jeep but advised they were her own keys and not her daughter’s. I informed her that the vehicle would be held until officers were able to speak with Montgomery. I asked what she intended to do after retrieving the phone, and she stated she planned to leave the vehicle where it was and take the phone back to her residence.
While looking through the window of the vehicle, I observed a cellular phone lying next to the driver’s seat. I also observed the driver’s seat was adjusted forward very close to the steering wheel, consistent with the seating position of a smaller-statured driver.
I requested Officer Chavez respond to the registered owner’s (Montgomery) residence to determine whether she was there. Officer Chavez advised that the mother was at the residence and appeared to be leaving as he pulled up. I responded to the residence, and after repeatedly knocking on the door, we made contact with Montgomery.
I advised Montgomery of her Miranda rights, which she stated she understood and agreed to waive by speaking with me.
While speaking with her, I observed she had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from her breath, was heavily intoxicated, and was very unsteady on her feet. I also observed an abrasion on her right hand that appeared consistent with an injury that could have been sustained during the crash.
I asked her where her Jeep was, and she stated that she and her friend had been trying to take the Jeep home and that they were “really messed up.” She stated her friend was the more sober of the two. She further stated she told her friend to pull over because they could both go to jail for driving the vehicle while intoxicated. She advised that after pulling over, her mother picked them up from the side of the road. I asked how she injured her right hand, and she stated she did not know. I then asked why she left the scene of the accident, and she stated she had “a lot going on right now.”
Based on my observations, her admissions, the witness information, and the totality of the circumstances, I placed her under arrest for DUI Less Safe and Leaving the Scene of an Accident. Montgomery was placed into handcuffs that were checked to fit and double locked behind her back. She was then placed into the transport compartment of my patrol vehicle, which was checked prior to transport and after transport. No contraband was found.
I then transported her to Memorial to get medically cleared due to being in an accident. While at the hospital, she told the doctor that she had chest pain and her head hurt. This could be due to being in an accident. After being medically cleared, she was transported to the Chatham County Jail, where she was given a $6,000 bond for her charges. The vehicle was towed by Sapp’s.
