Warning: The following story contains information regarding alleged physical violence against children.
CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. – The woman indicted on numerous charges, including murder, involving the death and disposal of her 20-month-old son will stand trial in a Chatham County courtroom later this year. Witnesses reported last seeing Quinton Simon at his Buckhalter Road residence on the morning of October 5, 2022.
Quinton was reported missing that day, and one week later, Chatham County police informed the family they suspected the child had perished and identified his mother as the suspect. Months later, after intense searches (including scouring approximately 1.2 million pounds of trash in 31 days), his remains were discovered in the nearby county landfill on November 18.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation disclosed that landfill searches wield a success rate of only about 5%.
Leilani Simon stands accused of killing Quinton and dumping his body in a dumpster. Coincidentally, her trial is set to begin a little over two years (almost to the day) since her son was last seen.
Simon’s charges included at least three felonies (malice murder, concealing the death of another, and providing a false statement) and a misdemeanor false report of a crime. According to court documents signed by Superior Court of Chatham County Judge Tammy Stokes, jury selection for Simon’s trial is scheduled to begin on October 9, 2024.
