On 1/31/2026 Officers were dispatched to [10 BLOCK] Roosevelt on report of a neighbor shooting a resident’s dog.

Upon arrival I met with [WITNESS #1], [WITNESS #1] showed me a video of a w/m pulling a brown colored dog from the carport and out of the frame of the camera. a short while later a gunshot is heard. [WITNESS #1] stated that her neighbor Cory Layne had come to their residence this date and rang her doorbell, spoke with her significant other and advised him that their dog had killed some chickens and he was going to kill the dog. Layne then killed the dog as shown on the video.

I then met with Cory at his residence [30 BLOCK] Roosevelt regarding the incident. Upon explaining to Layne, the reason for our presence, both he and his wife expressed surprise. Laney explained that he and [WITNESS #1] had been friends for some time before this incident. He further advised that there had been a problem with [WITNESS #1]’s dog killing his chickens. He advised that there was an understanding with [WITNESS #1] if her dog killed anymore of his chickens, he would kill the dog. On this date he stated he observed the dog kill two of his chickens and ran away. he stated that he then went to [WITNESS #1]’s residence and killed the dog. He further stated “I’m a man of my word” when referencing his past statements. Layne was placed under arrest and transported to the Chattooga County Jail where I charged him with cruelty to animals.
