On April 26, 2026, at approximately 2152 hours, I was conducting speed detection in the area of Mason’s Funeral Home on Highway 48. Using LIDAR, I observed a silver Dodge truck traveling at 56 mph in a posted 35 mph zone. I initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle at Pay-Tote located on Highway 114.
Upon approaching the vehicle, I made contact with the driver, identified as Jason Reece. While speaking with the offender, I detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the vehicle. I asked the offender if he had consumed any alcohol, and he initially stated that he had not.
I then asked the offender to step out of the vehicle and walk to my patrol unit. While doing so, he appeared unsteady on his feet. During further conversation, the offender exhibited slurred speech and had glassy, bloodshot eyes, indicating possible impairment.
Based on these observations, I conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle and located an empty Miller Lite beer can in the passenger seat. The offender later admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the day.
I requested that the offender perform standardized field sobriety tests (SFSTs), to which he agreed.
During the Walk-and-Turn test, I observed 3 out of 8 clues: inability to maintain balance, stepping off the line, and using arms for balance.
During the One-Leg Stand test, I observed 3 out of 4 clues: swaying, using arms for balance, and hopping.
During the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, I observed 6 out of 6 clues: lack of smooth pursuit in both eyes, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation in both eyes, and onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees in both eyes.
Based on the totality of the circumstances and the results of the field sobriety tests, it was determined that the offender was unsafe to operate a motor vehicle. The offender was placed under arrest for driving under the influence.
The offender refused to submit to a blood draw and also refused to provide a breath sample on the Alco-Sensor.
