On August 16th 2026 at approximately 1425 hours I Deputy J. Claxton was dispatched to [1000 BLOCK] Airport Road in reference to a male pointing a firearm at his brother, I advised Chattooga County E-911 that I was enroute code 3 Lights and sirens activated.
When I arrived on scene I observed two males on the front porch, later identfied as [VICTIM #1] and [WITNESS #1], I then observed a male, identfied as Travis Sweet, stepping out of a wooded area to my left. I advised Travis to raise his hands and walk slowly to me, when he was roughly 7 foot from me I advised him to take his hands and slowly raise his shirt and slowly turn around so I could scan for any weapons, I then asked him for his name and he stated it was Travis, during the inital 911 traffic he was male with firearm. Due to me being the only Deputy on scene I then detained Travis for officer safety, I then had [VICTIM #1] and [WITNESS #1] do the same thing for officer saftey, no weapons were on their person.
Cpl. Wilks arrived on scene and I advised him to read Travis his Miranda Warning, I then spoke to [WITNESS #1] and [VICTIM #1] about what had occrured. While speaking to [VICTIM #1] he advised that he pulled up to speak to his dad and they were talking about fishing lures when Travis interupted the conversation, [VICTIM #1] said that he called Travis an idiot and Travis stated that he was gonna “Whoop his a*s”.
[VICTIM #1] said he gave him the opportunity to fight and that’s when Travis ran to a camper on the property and pulled out a firearm, pointed it at him in his chest and head area and said he will kill him, [VICTIM #1] stated that’s when Travis pointed the gun at his father and him as well, [VICTIM #1] stated that Travis then took the firearm off in the woods.
I then spoke to [WITNESS #1] and he gave me the same story as well. I then asked to speak to the [WITNESS #2] (the dad of the boys). Mr. [WITNESS #2] was in a building in the backyard.
He stated that him and [VICTIM #1] was talking about fishing gear when Travis walked up calling [VICTIM #1]’s fishing stuff “Trash”. [WITNESS #2] stated thats when [VICTIM #1] called Travis an idiot, he said Travis then got into a fighting stance and started swinging on [VICTIM #1], thats when [VICTIM #1] swung but missed. He stated that Travis went and got a pellet rifle and pointed at [VICTIM #1]s chest and head said “Ill kill your a*s”. I asked [WITNESS #2] if the secuirty camera worked he stated yes but how they were pointed they would not have caught the altercation.
At this time, I walked back to my patrol vehicle and asked Travis if was willing to speak to me and show me where the rifle was at. He stated yes he then walked me to a wooded area behind a camper where I observed a black in color pellet rifle on the ground. The rifle was clocked open with no ammo inside of the chamber, I then walked back to the patrol vehicle where I then advised him that he would be placed under arrest at this time.
He stated that he didn’t do anything besides proctect his dad. He stated that he was defending himself when he pointed the rifle at [VICTIM #1] becaues he threw a trash can at him. While on scene I then gathered the pellet rifle and stored it into my patrol vehicle. I then asked [WITNESS #2], [VICTIM #1], and [WITNESS #1] if they would fill out a witness statement, they agreed but [WITNESS #2] did not wish to fill out a witness statament, his statement was recorded on body camera.
I then transported Travis to the Chattoga County Jail where I turned him over to jail staff without further incident.
