Warning: The following story contains information regarding alleged violence against disabled or elderly persons.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. – On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, a tragic hit-and-run accident resulted in the death of a 79-year-old Canton woman who was crossing Cumming Highway after visiting a loved one’s nearby grave. After responding to the scene at approximately 6:35 PM, officials quickly realized that the vehicle involved was an Amazon delivery truck.

Captain Jay Baker, a Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, explained, “There was evidence in the roadway that this was going to be an Amazon vehicle, a Rivian part. One of the deputies remembered seeing an Amazon truck turn down a nearby roadway.”

A Canton Police officer located an Amazon vehicle on Bishop Drive and found that the truck contained evidence matching the accident scene. Officials determined that the driver was 24-year-old Alpharetta man, London Best, who remains detained without bond on charges of hit-and-run resulting in death and first-degree vehicular homicide.

Baker called the incident a “terrible situation.” He added, “Had he not left the scene, the charges would be different. He likely wouldn’t have felonies.”

He continued, “I mean, it was dark, and she was crossing the highway. So, if you’re ever in an accident, stop, call 911, render aid – it makes all the difference in the world.”

The captain explained that the suspect not only left the scene but proceeded on his job route. Baker said, “It appears that he [knew] what happened, and he actually continued to deliver packages in the area.”

The victim, Sandra Fitts, died at the crime scene.

Austin Stowe, a spokesperson for Amazon, expressed in a statement, “We’re deeply saddened by this incident, and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. We’ll support local police as they investigate.”

The sheriff’s office Traffic Enforcement Unit continues to investigate this active case. Stowe disclosed that Best is listed as currently ineligible to deliver for Amazon, pending the case results.
