The following was taken from a press release distributed by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department on December 4, 2023:
CLARKE COUNTY, Ga. – On December 1, 2023, at approximately 10:55 PM, ACCPD was dispatched to an Aggravated Assault in the 100 block of Massey Lane. Upon arrival, ACCPD located three victims in what is being investigated as an apparent Murder-Suicide.
ACCPD’s initial investigation indicates that Juliana Navarnete-Moreno (Female, 26 YOA, Athens) and Hugo Martinez-Cerritos (Male, 20 YOA, Athens) arrived at a residence in the 100 block of Massey Lane in a 2013 Toyota Camry. Mangell Maivena (Male, 31 YOA, Athens), formerly involved in a domestic relationship with Navarnete-Moreno, approached the vehicle.
A domestic dispute took place, which escalated into gunfire. Maivena shot Navarnete-Moreno and Martinez-Cerritos and then took his own life with a firearm.
Navarnete-Morena was deceased at the scene. Martinez-Cerritos was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. He succumbed to those injuries on December 3, 2023.
