CLARKE COUNTY, Ga. – University of Georgia’s Charlie Condon was recently named the first baseball player from Georgia to receive the Golden Spikes Award. On Saturday, June 22, 2024, officials deemed the sophomore first baseman and outfielder the 46th winner of the award just before the start of the first College World Series Finals game.
Other finalists included Arkansas’ Hagan Smith and Oregon State’s Travis Bazzana. Condon joins Major League Baseball greats Jim Abbott, Bryce Harper, Tim Lincecum, and Buster Posey as fellow winners.
Condon stated, “It’s a tribute to the organization as a whole and everybody that’s involved with UGA. I share this with everybody who was part of this historic season. It’s the start of something new for Georgia baseball. I’m real excited to bring this back to Athens for the first time.”
USA Baseball’s CEO and Executive Director Paul Seiler said, “In a season that featured outstanding individual efforts from a wide range of players, Charlie Condon stood above the rest. Charlie’s 2024 season was nothing short of incredible to watch, and he is greatly deserving of this honor.
We are excited for Charlie to join our brotherhood of Golden Spikes Award winners and look forward to celebrating his special season.”
Condon had made history about a week prior, on Thursday, June 13, 2024, as the first Georgia player to win the Dick Howser Trophy and be awarded college baseball’s National Player of the Year, beating out Smith and Bazzana for that title as well.
He won the 2024 Bobby Bragan National Collegiate Slugger Award the following day. Condon’s victories also include SEC Player of the Year (before the postseason tournament), Baseball America and Perfect Game’s 2024 College Player of the Year, and a consensus First Team All-American.
UGA head coach Wes Johnson stated, “It’s hard to put into words what a great person Charlie is. He’s got great parents, and he’s a tremendously hard worker. What he did for our program this year – he elevated our program and elevated the game that he plays.
He moved around positions in the fall, and that ultimately helped him as a baseball player. And now to see the result – it’s impressive.”
Condon is the current leader in college baseball for batting average (.443), OPS (1.565), total bases (233), slugging percentage (1.009), and home runs (37). His impressive home run total broke two records in college and Georgia baseball.
Johnson added, “For him to win the Golden Spikes Award – he will have that for the rest of his life, and it’s something for Georgia that we can talk about and recruit with that no other team can this year.
It’s like winning the national title. There’s only one national champion, there’s only one Golden Spikes winner, and I’m proud it’s Charlie Condon.”
