The following was taken from a press release distributed by the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office on March 28, 2025.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. – District Attorney Sonya F. Allen of the Cobb Judicial Circuit announced today that a Cobb County Grand Jury has returned an indictment against former Cobb County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Ryan Hampton, 38, for multiple counts of allegedly defrauding individuals and organizations by receiving money through fundraising and gifts after falsely claiming to have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and having complications.

Hampton, worked as a deputy sheriff for five years. He was indicted on charges of Violation of Oath by Public Officer and Violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.

The indictment follows an investigation that began in November 2021, after the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office received multiple complaints regarding a social media account associated with Hampton.

Hampton was arrested on June 13, 2022.

“This indictment reflects our commitment to upholding the law and ensuring that public trust is maintained. He betrayed that trust by deceiving others for personal gain. No one should ever feel they are above the law,” said Cobb County District Attorney Sonya F. Allen.
