Warning: The following story contains information regarding alleged physical violence against children.
COBB COUNTY, Ga. – Authorities arrested a 57-year-old Austell man on Friday, September 6, 2024, after responding to a shooting reported at a Fringe Flower Drive home and discovering a 16-year-old girl with multiple gunshot wounds. Police arrived at the residence at approximately 9:20 AM and first found Alejandro Mario Bencomo Aguilar with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound before finding the teenager in an upstairs bedroom.
Emergency medical personnel initiated life-saving measures, but sadly, the teen victim did not survive. The suspect was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, underwent surgery, and is in recovery.
When responding officers initially approached Aguilar, they said he attempted to stab himself with a knife. He faces charges of aggravated assault, first-degree child cruelty, and murder.
Officials have not released the victim’s identity; however, neighbors have reported that she attended Pebblebrook High School. Several neighbors also said that the suspect was the victim’s stepfather, but police have not confirmed these claims.
A spokesperson for Cobb County Schools stated, “We are aware of a tragedy at the home of one of our students. As we mourn with the family, we are respecting their request for privacy during this impossible time.”
