COWETA COUNTY, Ga. – A Coweta County mother, Morgan Alyson Creel, 32, has been indicted by a grand jury for second-degree murder after her infant son died from severe burns caused by a hair dryer in November 2023.
On November 9, 2023, Creel called 911 after finding her baby unresponsive. The report said deputies discovered the child had severe burns to his right side while trying to administer CPR. Creel told police she had been lying down with her baby while using a hair dryer to warm him. She said she fell asleep with it on and woke up to find her son unresponsive. According to reports, official weather records for November 9, 2023, show the city of Newnan was approximately 68 degrees at the time of the incident.
The grand jury’s findings suggest that Creel was under the influence of drugs at the time and had passed out while the hair dryer remained on, exposing her child to extreme heat. The indictment states that Creel caused “cruel and excessive physical and mental pain” to her child by leaving the blow dryer running while she was unconscious.
Deputies also found drug paraphernalia at Creel’s home. Authorities believe her drug use played a major role in the incident. Creel was initially arrested on November 10, 2023, and charged with cruelty to children. She was later released on bond.
In October 2024, Creel was arrested again, this time for driving under the influence after deputies observed her weaving in and out of traffic, almost a year after the death of her infant son. Deputies attempted to conduct a field sobriety test but had to stop the test for her safety. She was booked into jail on DUI charges.
After the grand jury returned its indictment related to the death of her son, Creel was again arrested on January 24, 2025, and booked into Coweta County Jail. She is charged with murder in the second degree, cruelty to children in the second degree, and failure to appear.
She is currently awaiting trial.
