DEKALB COUNTY, Ga, – A DeKalb County family has filed a lawsuit for gross negligence against a daycare facility after a 9-month-old infant was severely burned when an employee placed him in scalding water for more than three minutes causing second-degree burns.
According to reports, the mother of the child said her son endured months of painful recovery after the incident at Young Mindz Learning Academy.
Surveillance footage obtained by Channel 2 Action News shows the employee aggressively removing the child’s clothing after he had an accident. The video then captures the worker placing him into a sink filled with hot water. When she eventually removed him, she appeared to realize for the first time that the child was in pain. In a panic, the employee is seen running frantically around the daycare for more than 15 minutes without properly addressing the child’s injuries.
The lawsuit contends that the employee ignored facility policy, which prohibits bathing children and instead requires the use of wet wipes for cleaning.
Following the incident, the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning conducted a three-month investigation. State officials concluded that the employee engaged in actions detrimental to the child’s well-being. Additionally, the investigation found that the daycare violated child supervision policies by failing to separate children under the age of three.
The daycare owner declined to comment.
Recent state inspection reports indicate that the facility has since made corrections and is currently in good standing with the state.
The employee involved was arrested and charged with cruelty to children.
She was sentenced to probation.
