On 03-04-2024, I responded in emergency patrol mode to Clark Ave/ Liberty Expressway in reference to an Auto Accident Hit and Run with Injuries.

Upon arrival, I made contact with a black male who identified himself as [VICTIM #1]. [VICTIM #1] was sitting in the driver seat of a white in color Chrysler Sebring Touring (FL Tag [REDACTED]). [VICTIM #1] was complaining about having pain in his neck and back. [VICTIM #1] stated he was sitting in the left lane stopped at the red light facing westbound when a gray vehicle rear ended him at a high rate of speed and “spun out.” [VICTIM #1] stated that after the vehicle rear-ended him, it spun around and hit the signs on the northside of the road. [VICTIM #1] stated the vehicle then fled going west and then turned left into a neighbor that could be seen from the original scene. I spoke to the front passenger of the vehicle, [WITNESS #1], and she stated the same information. [WITNESS #1] stated the vehicle was silver and had 4 doors like a Dodge Charger. I noticed [VICTIM #1] vehicle had damage to the right rear taillight and the right rear wheel was completed destroyed. I also noticed the stop sign and one way sign at this location were torn down. I observed a gray bumper next to the signs on the northwest corner of the intersection.

Sgt Tuten responded to the scene when I first arrived. I advised Sgt Tuten of the vehicle description and a brief synopsis of the incident. Sgt Tuten stated he would canvas the area for me and attempt to locate the suspect vehicle. Sgt Tuten then came over the radio a few moments later and stated he found a wrecked gray in color Honda Accord (FL [REDACTED]) that was in the roadway near N Central St/ Mulberry Ln. Sgt Tuten then advised he had someone in custody. I then responded to the location that the suspect vehicle was that turned out to be [200 BLOCK] N Central St. Sgt Tuten advised me that he observed the driver of the vehicle exit the car through the passenger rear door and try to go inside the house. Sgt Tuten stated he then followed the male and took him into custody. The male was identified as Aaron Cromartie.

While on scene, I made contact with the owner of the vehicle, [VICTIM #2]. [VICTIM #2] stated that she was drinking with Cromartie and some other people around 2000-2100hrs at this address. [VICTIM #2] stated she then went inside around 2100hrs and went to sleep. [VICTIM #2] stated she was then woken up by Sgt Tuten placing Cromartie in handcuffs. [VICTIM #2] stated she then realized that her vehicle had been taken. [VICTIM #2] stated she was visiting Cromartie and she was from Florida. [VICTIM #2] stated she has never given Cromartie permission to drive her car. [VICTIM #2] stated Cromartie and never driven her car. [VICTIM #2] completed a written statement in reference to this incident. The statement was placed in the Sergeant’s Office to be filed.

I then made contact with Cromartie and advised him of his Miranda Rights. Cromartie stated he understood his rights and refused to talk. Cromartie was constantly asking if he killed anyone in the accident. I constantly advised him “no” and he would continuously ask the question over and over. I then read Cromartie implied consent (breath) for people over the age of 21. Cromartie stated he understood and would submit to the test. After making it to the jail, Cromartie rescinded his decision to submit to the test. Cromartie was obviously intoxicated and continuously stated he was drunk but he didn’t car as long as he didn’t kill anyone. Cromartie made multiple spontaneous utterances while in custody. Cromartie stated he refused the breath test because he was obviously DUI. Cromartie stated we didn’t need to test him because he was “drunk as fu*k.” Cromartie also stated he just was trying to get something to eat from the Love’s truck stop and he didn’t mean to hurt anyone. Cromartie then continuously repeated that everything was good since “the bi*ch didn’t die.” Cromartie continuously repeated multiple statements that proved he was drunk and was involved in the incident.

Cromartie was transported to the Dougherty County Jail in the rear of my patrol vehicle (19-053). I secured my duty weapon in the trunk of my vehicle before entering the jail. Cromartie was then turned over to the jail staff without incident. I searched the rear of my patrol vehicle at the beginning of my shift and after transporting Cromartie which yielded negative results.

A NCIC/GCIC computer check was completed on all parties involved which yielded negative results. There are no witnesses or video surveillance at this time. This incident was audio and video recorded on my department issued Motorola body camera and is available upon request.

A warrant will be prepared for Theft by Taking- Motor Vehicle Theft (25-002794-01APD), DUI Alcohol- Less Safe (25-002794-02APD), Red Light Violation (25-002794-03APD), Failure to Maintain Lane (25-002794-04APD), Hit and Run- Injury/Death/Damage (25-002794-05APD), and Driving with a Suspended License (25-002794-06APD).
