Attacker shot by ex-wife after stabbing her in the head

Dougherty County The ex-husband of an Albany woman broke into her apartment around 3:45 AM on August 13 and stabbed the woman in her head while she was sleeping. Dougherty County Police responded to the attack and located the suspect less than an hour later.

Koda Ansenio Wheeler Sr., 38, was caught running from the scene with a gunshot wound in his back. Wheeler was shot by his ex-wife after stabbing her. He was transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and later booked into the Dougherty County Jail.

According to police, Wheeler used a crowbar to break into the home, where his son, ex-wife, and her boyfriend were sleeping.

Wheeler is charged with ‘Home Invasion,’ two counts of ‘Aggravated Assault,’ and 3rd Degree ‘Cruelty to Children.’

The victim had a Temporary Restraining Order against Wheeler from April 2021 to April 2022.

On Saturday, August 13, 2022 at 0343 hours, I (Ptl S Bridges) was dispatched to [3200 BLOCK] Sylvester Rd Lot #[REDACTED] Dougherty County, GA in reference to a Home Invasion.

I arrived on scene at 0353 hours and made contact with [WITNESS #1] (current boyfriend of [VICTIM #1]). [WITNESS #1] reported Koda Wheeler Sr. entered the home by breaking open the front door with a crowbar. [VICTIM #1] (former spouse of Koda Wheeler Sr) reported Koda Wheeler Sr stabbed her in the head with a knife, while she and [WITNESS #1] were asleep in the master bedroom. [VICTIM #1] reported she fired shots at Koda Wheeler Sr to get him out of the home. Koda Wheeler Sr was not on scene when I arrived.

[WITNESS #2] reported his father Koda Wheeler Sr stabbed his mother [VICTIM #1] in the head, with a knife from the kitchen. [WITNESS #2] provided a written witness statement that was downloaded to the DCP File Server under this case number. Med 6 arrived on scene at 0405 hours and transported [VICTIM #1] to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for treatment. Lt Michael Wood contacted Sgt Wertz (Detective) at 0409 hours in reference to this case. Photos were taken and downloaded to the DCP File Server.

At 0410 hours Ptl V. Snowden radioed Ptl D. Perry, Cpl R. Worthy, and Sgt J. Covey, stating she had a visual of Koda Wheeler Sr running near the woods off Sylvester Hwy. Ptl Perry, Cpl Worthy and Sgt Covey patrolled the area by car and on foot to capture the suspect. At approximately 0430 hours, Koda Wheeler Sr was captured at 216 Pine Bluff Rd (Church of God) by Cpl Worthy, Ptl Perry and Sgt Covey. Cpl Worthy stated Koda Wheeler Sr was bleeding in the lower back, which was identified as a gunshot wound.

At 0503 hours, Sgt Wertz arrived on scene at [3200 BLOCK] Sylvester Hwy Lot #[REDACTED]. Med 3 arrived on scene at (0507 hours) at the East Albany Church of God at 216 Pine Bluff Road and transported Koda Wheeler Sr to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. [WITNESS #2] was released to his grandmother ([REDACTED]) at 0530 hours. At approximately 0800 hours, Koda Wheeler Sr was discharged from Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Based on all statements from subjects involved, Koda Wheeler Sr was transported by Ptl Bert Jones to the Dougherty County Jail, and charged with the following:

  1. Home Invasion OCGA 16-7-5
  2. Aggravated Assault (FV) OCGA 16-5-21
  3. Aggravated Assault (FV) OCGA 16-5-21
  4. Cruelty to Children 3rd Degree OCGA 16-5-70

This case was turned over to Sgt Wertz for further investigations, and he will be issuing the warrants.
