On Sunday, 16 February 2025, I Deputy Mitchell, Badge #529, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a concern for welfare at [300 BLOCK] London Way, Lithia Springs, Ga 30122.
Upon arrival I made contact with 8 year old [VICTIM #1]. [VICTIM #1] said she was home alone and was terrified due to the heavy storm we currently were having. I asked [VICTIM #1] where her mother was and [VICTIM #1] said her mother Michaela Jones left for a party at the beginning of the night and was supposed to be back home already. [VICTIM #1] said she has tried to call her mother numerous times and she has not answered. [VICTIM #1] was crying and again was saying she was scared because of the bad weather. I asked [VICTIM #1] if she would contact her mother again to see if she would answer and she did. This time Michaela finally answered the phone and all I could hear is loud music on the phone. I tried speaking to Michaela but neither one of us could hear one another. I advised Michaela to walk away from the music so I could speak with her. I announced who I was to Michaela and advised her the reason for the call. Michaela immediately began to yell and curse toward [VICTIM #1] and I stopped Michaela and asked her where she was currently at.
Michaela said she was currently in McDonough and Michaela hung up the phone when I started asking for her full name and date of birth. I attempted to call Michaela back and once again when I asked for her date of birth she ended the call. I spoke with Lt. Long and explained to him what was going on. Lt. Long advised for me to transport [VICTIM #1] to the Sheriff’s Office and contact DFACS (Department of Family And Children Safety). Michaela called back and I advised her I was taking [VICTIM #1] to the Sheriff’s Office. Michaela said she was on the way home and I asked her how far out she was. Michaela said she was fifteen minutes away and I advised her she could not be fifteen minutes away if she was coming from McDonough. This time Michaela advised she was in downtown Atlanta and she would be home soon. I advised Michaela I did not believe her and [VICTIM #1] would be at the Sheriff’s Office.
I transported [VICTIM #1] to the Sheriff’s Office and contacted DFCS and spoke with operator [REDACTED]. I explained the situation to [REDACTED] and while I was speaking with her Michaela’s sister [WITNESS #1] arrived on scene. [REDACTED] advised as long as it was okay with Michaela then [WITNESS #1] could take custody of [VICTIM #1]. I asked Dispatch to run a criminal history on [WITNESS #1] and she did not have any outstanding history and no active warrants. Michaela arrived on scene and she could not answer to why she left her daughter home alone. I advised Michaela she was under arrest and if she would like for [WITNESS #1] to take custody of [VICTIM #1] I would need her to write a statement allowing [WITNESS #1] to take custody of [VICTIM #1]. Michaela wrote a short statement and [WITNESS #1] took custody of [VICTIM #1].
I completed warrant for Child Abandonment and Reckless Conduct. A copy of the report was printed out and placed in the patrol room warrant tray. I placed the written statement in the patrol room tray as well.
