On November 17, 2023 I was dispatched to the Sheriff’s Office lobby to take a report for possible fraud.

When I arrived, I spoke with [WITNESS #1] and [WITNESS #2], who explained that their father, [VICTIM #1], had his credit card information stolen and was being used fraudulently. The sisters told me that they believed the offender was Dana Johnston, who worked for [VICTIM #1] on his property in a variety of positions. [WITNESS #1] told me that they found out the fraudulent transactions began in May of this year, mostly through Amazon charges totaling over $1,250. When [WITNESS #1] checked with Amazon, they said the card was being used by an account linked to them under the name Dana Johnston. [WITNESS #1] stated that when she called the banks to try and figure out what was happening, they informed her that there were many more incorrect charges totaling in the thousands.

After gathering more information, I called more senior deputies on my shift, who advised me to get in touch with CID. I went and found a CID deputy who came to the lobby and explained in detail the next steps they would need to take to prepare the case for financial crimes. CID discussed gathering banking records as well as reporting the incident to the FTC to prevent any further fraudulent charges.
