On May 1, 2026 at approximately 17:09, deputies responded to the area of Old Augusta Road South in between Abercorn and Chimney Roads in reference to a motor vehicle crash. Initial reports indicated that one driver was entrapped and became unconscious.
Upon arrival I, Corporal James McKie took over the crash investigation. After being transported to an area hospital, one driver was declared deceased. The at fault driver, Deiby Jhonatan Janamegoy Jansasoy, was arrested while attempting to leave the hopital without receiving treatment after it was determined he was also wanted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for a removal order.
He was transported to the Effingham County Jail charged with Homicide by Vehicle, Failure to Maintain Lane, Driving While Unlicensed, Reckless Driving, and DUI. This crash remains under investigation and charges may be amended or added as the investigation progresses.
