Warning: The following story contains information regarding physical violence against children.

SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. – On October 16, 2023, Spalding County Sheriff’s officers booked 28-year-old Alteria Yarbrough Williams and charged her with aggravated assault and child cruelty for injecting her baby with insulin. Her infant was not diagnosed with diabetes.

On September 13, 2023, the baby was transported by ambulance from a Chappell Mill Road residence in Griffin to the Children’s Hospital in Macon. A Barnesville police sergeant told the Spalding officer that Williams had admitted to injecting the baby with insulin on this day.

The sergeant explained that Williams was currently detained at the Lamar County Jail, and the Spalding County officer traveled to the Barnesville Police Department to interview her about the crime that occurred in their jurisdiction.

Williams told the officer she “has bad urinary tract infections, and they cause her to black out.” She said she injected her infant with insulin at her mother’s house during a blackout.

She added that she received a bipolar diagnosis “and other things” at Ridgeview in Smyrna in “June of 2023” and has experienced blackouts since 2021. She said she “does not know why she would do that, and she has been off medicine for a month and a half.”

When the officer inquired about “the cancer that she has,” Williams said she “made that up” and “received $15K – $16K for a gun raffle and a BBQ plate sale to help with doctor bills.” The officer contacted the District Attorney’s Office and began an investigation into the scheme.

This case is pending in court.

On Oct. 10th, 2023, I was advised to contact an investigator from Barnesville Police Department, and I was able to contact Sgt. Landers from investigations in reference to a crime that might have occurred in Spalding County Ga.

Sgt. Landers advised me that they were contacted by DFACS about possible abuse that occurred to a date of birth of that occurred on 09/10/2023 and 09/13/2023.

Sgt. Landers advised that the baby was injected with insulin and was not a diabetic and when they were handed the case, they thought at the time of the case both incident dates occurred in Barnesville Ga.

Sgt. Landers stated on 9/13/2023 was transported to the children’s hospital in Macon Ga from [100 BLOCK] Chappell Mill Rd in Griffin Ga. I went back and looked at the call log on RMS and was able to locate the call where Alteria Williams, the mother of called 911 and was transported to the Hospital by Ambulance to Macon Ga. The initial call was received by 911 on 9/13/2023 at 1136 hours.

Sgt. Landers advised that they have all the medical records of the child from the hospital, and they will be attached to a jump drive with all the other evidence. He also advised me that they have outstanding warrants on Alteria already for aggravated assault and cruelty to children.

Sgt. Landers stated from his investigation, he was able to talk to Alteria and she stated to him that she injected with insulin on 09/13/2023 in Spalding County Ga at [100 BLOCK] Chappell Mill Rd.

On 10/12/2023 Sgt. Landers contacted me and advised that they have Alteria in custody in Lamar County Jail and advised that they were going to interview on Friday Oct 13th, 2023, and stated that I can come to the Police Department and speak with her about the case that might have occurred in my jurisdiction.

On 10/13/2023 I arrived at the Barnesville Police to interview Alteria. I was able to interview Alteria with Inv. B Jones and before the interview started, I read Alteria her Miranda Rights and essentially, I learned the following.

During the interview Alteria stated that she has bad urinary tract infections, and they cause her to black out. Alteria stated on 09/13/2023 she blacked out and injected with insulin at her mother’s house at [100 BLOCK] Chappell Mill Rd. She stated that she has been diagnosed with bipolar and other things and she was diagnosed in June of 2023 at Ridgeview in Smyrna Ga.

Altria stated that she does not know why she would do that, and she has been off medicine for a month and half and she was issued the medicine since June 2023. She stated that she has had blacks since 2021. Alteria stated that she remembers what she did to after the black out was done.

During the interview I asked her about the cancer that she has and she advised me that she made that up and she received $15,000 to $16,000 for a gun raffle and a BBQ plate sale to help with Doctor bills. She advised me that it was all made up and that case I am still speaking with the DA’s Office about.

I was able to obtain arrest warrants on Alteria for Aggravated assault and cruelty to children 1st degree.
