BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. – Authorities in Bartow County have arrested five people on charges of aggravated animal cruelty after discovering 47 dogs living in squalid and inhumane conditions at a property near Cartersville.

Deputies responded to a home on Old Tennessee Road on the afternoon of May 26 after a report of suspicious activity involving a U-Haul truck and distressed animals. When law enforcement arrived, they found a chaotic and unsanitary scene: several dogs were running loose on the property, appearing emaciated and unwell, while others were confined to kennels or packed inside the back of a sweltering U-Haul truck.

Inside the truck, which lacked proper ventilation and air conditioning, authorities discovered six dead dogs and several more in critical condition. The interior was soaked in a mix of water, urine and feces, with a strong odor of decay. Temperatures outside that day were in the upper 80s with high humidity.

Behind the home, deputies found more than 20 dogs housed in small, filthy outdoor kennels. Some of the dogs were lethargic, anemic, or lying in their own waste, while others had already died. Another five dogs were located inside the residence, also living in poor conditions with urine- and feces-soaked bedding.

In total, 47 dogs were removed from the property over two days. Authorities said 10 were already deceased at the scene and four more died during the short drive to the Bartow County Animal Shelter. A veterinarian later determined that 16 surviving dogs were too ill to recover and were humanely euthanized. Eighteen dogs remain under quarantine, where their health is being closely monitored.

Investigators arrested two primary caretakers, 21-year-old Alicia Kelly-Anne Alsup of Taylorsville and 23-year-old Tucker Scott Campbell of Acworth. Alsup told authorities they were using the U-Haul to transport the dogs to be rehomed, reportedly traveling up to two hours out of state with the animals crated in the unventilated truck.

Three others, Gabriel Alex Cammon, 26, of Douglasville; Garland Windsor Adams, 77, of Acworth; and Cody Noah Reimer, 27, of Acworth, were also charged with aggravated animal cruelty. Investigators say the group helped load the dogs and knowingly contributed to their neglect.

The investigation is ongoing.
