WALTON COUNTY, Ga. – A 19-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with vandalism of a memorial sign for Charlie Kirk at a Georgia business, police said.
Loganville officers said they were alerted Monday to property damage at Tire Dock, where a sign that read “In loving memory of Charlie Kirk” had been defaced.
Photos released by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office showed the words “RACIST SYBAU” spray-painted across the sign. A Walton County deputy later cleaned the damage.
“Not everyone agrees with the beliefs of Charlie Kirk, but everyone owes respect to those who are mourning his death. He was a husband, a father, and a friend,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a statement.
By early Tuesday, investigators identified the suspect as Megan Phyllis Bucheger, 19, of Snellville. She was taken into custody with assistance from the Snellville Police Department.
“I am extremely grateful to our detectives and officers for their determination to identify and locate this suspect,” Loganville Police Chief M.D. Lowry said. “We are also grateful for the assistance and support from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office and Snellville Police Department in quickly resolving this case.”
“Hate has no place in our community,” Lowry added.
Kirk was fatally shot on Sept. 10 on a college campus in Utah. Prosecutors said Tuesday they plan to seek a capital murder charge against 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in his killing.
