Fulton County, Ga. — An Atlanta couple has been charged after investigators said they stole grave markers and other memorial items from a local cemetery, leaving damaged plots behind.

Police responded to Crest Lawn Memorial Park after reports that bronze vases, bronze plaques, and granite slabs had been removed from graves. Investigators said the thefts occurred between Aug. 4 and Aug. 12 of last year and estimate the total value of the missing items at approximately $130,000.

Authorities later identified the suspects as Emanuel Pena, 43, and Allison Pena, 39.

During the execution of a search warrant, officers reported recovering 10 large grave markers, five vases and a small plaque. Body camera footage shows officers locating grave markers bearing several surnames.

Investigators also recovered grinding wheels, which authorities believe were used to alter the metal to prevent the items from being traced.

Both Emanuel and Allison Pena were charged with theft by taking and booked into the Fulton County Jail. Jail records show they have since been released.

The investigation remains ongoing.
