Warning: The following story contains information regarding physical violence against/neglect of children.
Update: A Fulton County jury has convicted a father on multiple charges in the death of his 4-year-old daughter, who authorities say was starved to death.
Rodney McWeay was found guilty on all counts related to the December 2023 death of his daughter, Treasure McWeay. The charges include malice murder, felony murder, cruelty to children, kidnapping and false imprisonment.
McWeay showed no visible reaction in court, only nodding as the verdict was read.
Officers responded to a home on Renfrew Court on Dec. 11, 2023, and found Treasure unresponsive and not breathing, according to police. Grady EMS transported the child to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
McWeay was arrested later that month.
Sentencing is expected within the next 30 days, though a specific date has not yet been scheduled.
FULTON COUNTY, Ga. – On Thursday, December 21, 2023, Atlanta Police officers arrested Rodney Mcweay for the murder of his four-year-old daughter, who was found unresponsive and extremely dehydrated and malnourished in his home. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Mcweay is accused of depriving Treasure Mcweay and his two other children of essential food and water.
The suspect’s arrest warrants described Treasure as “extremely underweight, and her face appeared to be sunken in around the eyes and cheekbones.” Her December 13th autopsy revealed she weighed a mere 24 pounds, and her stomach contained only five milliliters of liquid.
Authorities responded to a Renfrew Court residence near Adamsville on December 11, 2023, regarding an unresponsive child. They transported her to Hughes Spalding Children’s Hospital, where staff pronounced her deceased.
Mcweay’s other children, ages three and four, suffered from “extreme malnourishment and severe dehydration” and were hospitalized due to their dire conditions. Mcweay is accused of “not providing sustenance in the form of food or water for any of his three children, and doctors confirmed that he also failed to administer one of his children’s anti-seizure medication.
On July 6, 2023, Mcweay allegedly kidnapped the three children from an Aberdeen, Maryland residence. He prevented contact between them and their mother, their “sole legal guardian,” family members, and DFCS workers.
Officials revealed that Mcweay did not allow the children to step outside or exit their rooms without permission. A search warrant of his home produced no food except expired milk and eggs and no articles of children’s clothing.
Additionally, police discovered cameras throughout the home, with a few aimed at the children’s beds. They transported him to the Fulton County Jail, where he faces three kidnapping counts for the July incident and murder and three counts of child cruelty and false imprisonment without bond for the most recent.
This case is pending in court.
