Warning: The following story contains information regarding alleged physical violence against children.
FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. – Authorities arrested the parents of an infant nearly one year after Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center reported discovering 29 broken and fractured bones in various stages of healing on the 6-week-old child. The baby, who initially presented a broken femur and facial bruising, had also sustained injuries to her ribs, arms, and legs, according to a full-body scan.
A hospital nurse disclosed that the baby’s mother and grandmother had changed their stories and inquired about the injuries. They asked if the broken bones could have resulted from a fall; next, they asked if they could have happened due to being dropped.
Hospital employees alerted authorities on February 7, 2024, and a Rome Police officer responded to investigate. The suspects told the officer that the “fall” must have occurred earlier that day during an appointment with a pediatrician. According to reports, Cox told police that she noticed the girl’s injuries hours later and decided to go to the hospital.
Officials notified the Division of Family and Children Services, who responded and took the victim and her sister into protective custody.
Savannah Carol-Louise Cox and Shane Avery Moore, the primary caregivers of the two children, face charges of aggravated battery and first-degree child cruelty.
Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the Rome Police Department.
