DeKalb mother fatally shoots 11-year-old daughter in apparent murder-suicide, police say

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – At approximately 7:43 PM on Sunday, August 11, 2024, DeKalb County police responded to a distress call reporting a shooting at the Polo Club Apartments, located in the 1200 block of Ashley Creek Circle, Stone Mountain. Upon arrival, officers discovered two people who had succumbed to gunshot wounds. The scene was subsequently processed by detectives and crime scene investigators, with a vehicle towed away as evidence.

The DeKalb County Police Department has identified the victims as 11-year-old Makenzie B. and her mother, 31-year-old Qiana Rainley

Makenzie B. was a bright young girl who had recently celebrated a milestone in her life. According to police, she had recently completed the DeKalb County Police Department’s Summer Survival Swim Program.

Her mother, Qiana Rainley, was identified as the individual responsible for the horrific act. The DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Rainley’s identity and the nature of the incident.

The DeKalb County Police Department continues to investigate the incident to determine the motive behind the act. As of now, no clear reason has been identified.

The department’s official statement on social media reflected the community’s mourning, stating that Makenzie was “taken away from us way too soon.”

Community members expressed their condolences and support for the family through gestures such as placing flowers at the scene.
