DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. – Two Douglas County parents are facing multiple child cruelty charges after their 5-month-old daughter was discovered with severe injuries, including fractures to her ribs, arms, legs, and wrists.
William Issac Dakota King and Amber Marie Rivera, both 20, appeared before a Douglas County judge Monday morning. The judge denied bond for the couple, and the infant remains in the custody of the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS). Family members left the courthouse without comment, one visibly in tears, after hearing the allegations.
Each parent faces at least 18 charges stemming from alleged abuse in Lithia Springs, including cruelty to children, obstruction of officers, and aggravated battery. Court documents revealed that the infant, born prematurely at 24 weeks, suffered 30 broken bones. A doctor noted that injuries of this severity are only seen in cases of child abuse.
Investigators said the parents attempted to mislead authorities by claiming the infant’s injuries were the result of a car accident that was never reported. Prosecutors also said the couple tried to enlist another person to corroborate the story, but that individual refused. In addition to physical abuse, the parents are accused of failing to properly feed their daughter.
Authorities said additional charges against the couple could be possible as the investigation continues.
