Drone drug smuggling attempt leads to arrest of Statesboro woman

WILCOX COUNTY, Ga. — A Statesboro woman has been arrested after deputies say a drone was used in an attempt to smuggle drugs into a state prison, authorities said.

According to the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to an area near Owensboro Road, where they discovered a drone and three packages on the ground.

Investigators reported finding approximately 15.5 pounds of marijuana, nearly 17 pounds of methamphetamine and other contraband that they believe was intended for delivery to Wilcox State Prison.

Authorities said the woman is facing nine felony charges and one misdemeanor, including charges related to the use of an unmanned aircraft, drug trafficking, conspiracy and weapons possession.

Officials said the investigation remains active, and additional arrests or charges are possible.
