TURNER COUNTY, Ga. – The Turner County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for prayers for a hospitalized deputy injured during a multi-county pursuit in the early morning of Monday, April 8, 2024. Deputy Nikolaus Herrick is recovering at a Macon hospital and is listed as stable.
Georgia State Patrol officials said Herrick attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a red SUV around mile marker 72 on Interstate 75. Traveling southbound, the driver sped up rather than pulling over, initiating a chase that led them into Tifton.
While in pursuit through an intersection, Herrick struck a tractor-trailer, which dragged his patrol vehicle approximately 25 feet after the impact.
A photograph of Herrick’s totaled vehicle displayed the extensive damage it sustained. The sheriff’s office revealed that surgeons said they discovered the injuries were “more than originally damaged.”
Law enforcement later discovered the other vehicle flipped over and abandoned in a Golf Street ditch. Officials have yet to identify its driver.
This case remains active.
