HALL COUNTY, Ga. — A Hall County judge has sentenced a Georgia dentist to life in prison after a jury found her guilty of fatally shooting her boyfriend at their Lake Lanier home.

Suzanne Mericle was arrested in March 2025 after investigators said she shot and killed James David Barron through a closed bedroom door. Barron died at the scene.

Mericle faced multiple charges at trial, including malice murder. A jury later convicted her of felony murder, aggravated assault, criminal damage in the first degree and tampering with evidence.

Court records show the aggravated assault charge merged into the felony murder conviction. Hall County Superior Court Judge John Breakfield sentenced Mericle to life in prison with the possibility of parole. The criminal damage and tampering charges each carry one-year sentences that will run concurrently with the life sentence. Officials said Mericle will not be eligible for parole until she is 93 years old.

Mericle previously worked as a dentist on St. Simons Island, where she operated Mericle Dentistry. The business is now listed as permanently closed.

Defense attorneys argued Barron had assaulted Mericle earlier in the night. They said she fired at the bedroom door in an attempt to unlock it and retrieve her cellphone. The defense also argued Mericle suffered from PTSD related to prior abusive relationships and requested a reduced sentence.

Breakfield rejected the request, saying the alleged past abuse was not a significant contributing factor in the crime. The judge also ruled Mericle was the primary aggressor in the shooting.

Before sentencing, Barron’s family members addressed the court in victim impact statements. His children said they had waited more than a year for justice and criticized the defense’s portrayal of their father during trial.

Barron’s ex-wife said Mericle acted out of jealousy and anger the night of the shooting.

In handing down the sentence, Breakfield told Mericle he believed she had multiple opportunities to avoid the violence but failed to do so.
