School districts throughout the country are taking additional precautions after a TikTok social media trend dubbed Friday “American School Shooting Day.”

According to Atlanta Public Schools, the challenge invites students to make threats against “every school in the United States” on Friday, December 17.

Polk County School District has decided to cancel classes on Friday “out of an abundance of caution.” They claim to be working closely with law enforcement to ensure everyone’s safety.

Officials say in a message to APS parents and staff that they do not believe the threats are real, but they are treating them seriously.

While no direct threats have been received, the Gordon County School District said they are still working closely with local police departments to guarantee student safety.

School administrators even urged parents to watch their children’s social media use in order to prevent similar instances from occurring in the future.
