BUTTS COUNTY, Ga. – A Jackson police detective has been arrested after allegedly lying to obtain a search warrant, officials said.
Detective Alan Richards turned himself in on charges of violation of oath of office and making false statements, according to Jackson Mayor Carlos Duffey.
Duffey said Richards is accused of including false information in a search warrant affidavit, which was later presented to a magistrate judge. The nature of the alleged false statements has not been disclosed.
City and county officials requested an outside review, prompting Monroe County Sheriff Brad Freeman to launch an independent investigation. That investigation led to the issuance of an arrest warrant for Richards.
“The actions of one person are not indicative of the men and women of the Jackson Police Department,” Duffey said in a statement.
Richards was booked into the Butts County Jail. His current employment status with the department has not been confirmed.
