BARROW COUNTY, Ga. – On Tuesday, a judge granted a $500,000 bond for Colin Gray, the father of the suspect in the Apalachee High School shooting, following a motion filed by his attorneys earlier this month.

During the hearing, Gray took the stand to answer questions from both prosecutors and defense attorneys. Family members of several victims also spoke in court, urging the judge to deny bond.

Richard Aspinwall, the father of math teacher Ricky Aspinwall, and Brianna Schermerhorn, the mother of 14-year-old Mason Schermerhorn, addressed the court about their losses.

“I can tell you it’s been devastating for my family. I have two little girls who are growing up without a daddy,” Aspinwall said.

“At the end of the day, I want him buried under the prison and not allowed to have an impact on any other children,” Schermerhorn said.

As Chief Judge Primm made his ruling, he told the victim’s family members that he had to follow the law, not emotion. Gray was granted bond on the following factors: He is not being considered a flight risk because he was born and raised in Georgia. He is not believed to pose a danger to the community. The judge also believes the chances are Gray will not commit any new felonis if released.

Gray will have to post at least $50,000 of the $500,000 in cash to be released from jail. According to reports, his attorneys are working to get the money together.

Colt Gray, the suspect in the shooting, faces 55 charges, including malice and felony murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and cruelty to children. His father, Colin Gray, has been charged with 29 crimes, including second-degree murder, second-degree cruelty to children, and involuntary manslaughter. Both have pleaded not guilty.

A grand jury indictment alleges that Colin Gray provided his son access to a firearm and ammunition “after receiving sufficient warning that Colt Gray would endanger the bodily safety of another.”

His attorneys have filed a motion to dismiss the indictment, arguing that it “fails adequately to charge this defendant with any offense against the laws of the State of Georgia.” A judge has not yet ruled on that motion.

According to court records, no upcoming hearings are scheduled for Colt Gray at this time.
