Warning: The following report describes sexual violence.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. – Alpharetta Police arrested a 32-year-old man on Friday, April 5, 2024, for allegedly slipping his Lyft driver a sedative, kidnapping and raping her, and stealing her vehicle. Investigators disclosed that the woman awoke in an unfamiliar hotel room with her car missing.

Captain R. Andrew Splawn explained that the victim provided transportation for Demarcus Johnson on Monday, March 11, 2024. Johnson and the driver discussed a connection and agreed to get drinks and converse further.

Splawn said, “The two engaged in conversation and agreed to have a drink with one another, at which time the victim doesn’t remember and is unable to account for the events that evening.” A toxicology report revealed prescription narcotics foreign to her.

Authorities apprehended Johnson and charged him with aggravated assault, kidnapping, rape, and theft by taking.

A Lyft spokesperson stated, “Safety is fundamental to Lyft, and the behavior described is reprehensible and has no place in our community or anywhere in society. We have been in contact with the driver to offer our support. Additionally, the rider’s account was permanently removed from the Lyft platform, and we assisted law enforcement with their investigation.”

Splawn advised rideshare users, both passengers and drivers, to remain cautious and attentive. He said, “Whether you’re an operator, a driver, in a rideshare as a patron, it’s always important to be aware of your surroundings and make sure you’re vigilant.”

This investigation remains active. Officials are asking the public to contact the Alpharetta Police Department at 678-297-6338 if they have any information regarding this case.
